They want whatever quikripabong tell them they want. And unfortunately the driving force behind corporates like them is the mighty dollar.
I can't believe that crew pay a grand for a brand name pop out with an eggshell glass job. A PU hand cut and glassed by my shaper starts under $600, you do the math on these corporate ****ers profit margins, especially once you factor in economies of scale and an Asian workforce. I refuse to support the bastards, just on principle.
I totally agree that big names are excessively priced.
I've been lucky that my big name boards, where picked up either on sale, 2nd hand or whilst i worked in store and got a deal.
The big contributor to the huge RRP is the shop margin.
Hypothetically a board costs a shaper (non local, big name) $300 cost to make.
They then need to make some money so they add on say $200.
Thats W/S @ $500. You then add the stupid GST system +10% = $50, freight from warehouse to the shop $50. its then cost the shop $600 to chuck it on the rack.
The shop then needs to make some cash so they add their margin and bam you get $800-$900.
Then suppose that model or size they chose is not super popular, they do a deal for a regular or its sold on sale, all of a sudden the shop only makes $50- $80. which doesn't work.
I'm sure most people don't realise how little a shop makes out of selling surfboards. The accessories have better margins.
You may ask why shapers dont sell cheaper then, as they don't have the W/S margin to cover, but that upsets your accounts so you have to keep it the same.
Sure you might say, "oh that big name, corporate, china shaped maker, only costs $50 to make a board" but they also have costs of team riders, sponsoring events, advertising and others, that a little local shaper doesn't.
I see both sides, but unfortunately my 1 local board, doesn't really get me excited like the other (big namer models i ride) do. so it just sits in the shed. It did once, but my style changed and the big namers suit em better now.
Oh and on the boardshort thing, ****, don't get me started.
TARGET surf development all the way.
