It might not sound like it, but im all for quality hand shaped boards here in Australia, my point is that im not going to pay $850 for a DHD that Darren Handley has never touched or never even knew i ordered it. If he actually shaped the board, then i would pay that price + more. there should be a price for a hand shaped board & a lower price for an Aussie "pop out" and the "pop out" should be considerably less.

Oops bought a Brand new 8' Hot Tamale board today. Now I'm guessing its not the best quality but hey i paid $200
Thats cheap In my books.

My daughter is going to love it..

Hey JB, I got the same board from the guy at malaga. Perfect for putting my daughter up the front. Can't go wrong for $200

Im tempted to get myself a 10'er..I see they are popping up on line. People obviously buying them and trying to resell for a small profit

Nice guy and i was standing in the showroom thinking, what the hell. Oh how i was supprised

They want whatever quikripabong tell them they want. And unfortunately the driving force behind corporates like them is the mighty dollar.

I can't believe that crew pay a grand for a brand name pop out with an eggshell glass job. A PU hand cut and glassed by my shaper starts under $600, you do the math on these corporate ****ers profit margins, especially once you factor in economies of scale and an Asian workforce. I refuse to support the bastards, just on principle.

And their boardies, smicko??

Do I buy their boardies??
Phuck NO! I'd rather poke toothpicks up my japseye than pay a hunj for a pair of boardies.
What a bloody joke that is. My boardies come from Best or Less or preferably the Salvos.

I understand were you are coming from, but i buy there brands. I like the clothes and i do find they tend to last so quality is better than some cheaper stuff. But i always buy everything on special. When you can buy quality walk shorts for $25 ill buy 5 pairs and were them for work.. Shirts i only pay $20 bucks for. Jeans maybe $40 and i think those prices are fair. Even something like Sanuks. $100 pair of shoes one par i got for $40 and one for $25.

Oh and buy most of it from my local SUrf store, that has a young girl, a young guy and a wicked board room.

Wasn't going to have a say, but can't help myself. I have never owned or ever will own a pop out brand board.
Living near Newcastle I have some of the worlds best shapers on hand. I've had boards shaped by Pete Mcabe, Pete Sheely and keep going back to Sam Egan. All of these blokes practice a dying art.
I picked up a new board from Sam about 3 weeks ago that performed exactly as I asked for and has the solid glass job I was after.
The shed has piles of rough blanks stacked up outside the shaping room that then emerge as works of art after he works his magic with electric planes and a bucket load of custom hand tools.
I don't want my son to not have the option of dealing with a shaper like these guys, but if people keep buying mass produced boards with glad wrap as a glass job they will force guys like this into extinction.
As a side note, I've never paid more than $800.00 for a hand crafted piece of art.

All done now

Im not **** stirring at all. or maybe just a little bit either way with the introduction of shaping machines the price of boards should go down.

Maybe your looking at it a little wrong. Could it be that THANKS to shaping machines, prices have only gone up a smaller amount. With out them we could be pay a few thousand for each board

To true. Case in point price of boards mid 90s was around 550 if I remember correctly. These days you can get a SDR for around 695 I think. That's only 26% inflation in 18 years!!

And SDR. does it himself no ghost shapers in his factory. Boards are made from blank to happy surfer all under one roof so no quality controls problems in the house of Clearwater surfboards yeeew.
On the clothing issue we are pretty lucky here on the goldy. I picked up a pair of Hurley phantom boardies for $50 and they are the best things that have ever touched my nuts. Ripquick bong have factories all over the place so c cheap cheap

I totally agree that big names are excessively priced.
I've been lucky that my big name boards, where picked up either on sale, 2nd hand or whilst i worked in store and got a deal.

The big contributor to the huge RRP is the shop margin.

Hypothetically a board costs a shaper (non local, big name) $300 cost to make.
They then need to make some money so they add on say $200.
Thats W/S @ $500. You then add the stupid GST system +10% = $50, freight from warehouse to the shop $50. its then cost the shop $600 to chuck it on the rack.
The shop then needs to make some cash so they add their margin and bam you get $800-$900.
Then suppose that model or size they chose is not super popular, they do a deal for a regular or its sold on sale, all of a sudden the shop only makes $50- $80. which doesn't work.

I'm sure most people don't realise how little a shop makes out of selling surfboards. The accessories have better margins.

You may ask why shapers dont sell cheaper then, as they don't have the W/S margin to cover, but that upsets your accounts so you have to keep it the same.

Sure you might say, "oh that big name, corporate, china shaped maker, only costs $50 to make a board" but they also have costs of team riders, sponsoring events, advertising and others, that a little local shaper doesn't.

I see both sides, but unfortunately my 1 local board, doesn't really get me excited like the other (big namer models i ride) do. so it just sits in the shed. It did once, but my style changed and the big namers suit em better now.

Oh and on the boardshort thing, ****, don't get me started.
TARGET surf development all the way.

I'd check your facts and the vested motivations of those supplying them to you Chrispy.

He made pioedream funboards and fishes in China. Not Bourtons. This is not something he has hidden or denied.

Spent a year travelling oz last year, and picked up one of those liquid lines boards in Torquay when l was there.
A little 5'10 x 20. Walked out of the shop , board, tailpad, legrope, wax, for $500.
cant remember doing that since the late 80's, early 90's
Fair enough its not an ozzie board and thought it might not last long, but hey, l was travelling on a budget and shouldn't have even been buying a new board. but l wanted to give a semi fish a go for the east coast and wasn't going to spend $800 on a board l might not have liked.

Turned out the board was sik, didn't get off the thing the whole east coast, rode it at all the classic point breaks in the bible (mark warrens surfing atlas ) and it held up to alot of carnage.
Even when l got to northwest w.a it held up, couldn't get off the thing it went that good.

So l still have it now and it's in no worst condition than any of my other old local shaped boards.

Yeahhh , now l think of it , l travelled oz riding a board made in china. Not sure how that makes me feel.
but **** l had some gooood waves, and that 300 bucks l saved..........thats a fair few beers...........and they tasted gooood!!!!

Keep surfing guys.........yeooow.

Yeah, it's tempting. They'd be good for just bashing through crowds. But a sup?

Didya look at their team? Not a surfer amongst them.
