Boofy has a good point, why waist your time north with asea who will always be in the water before you and I wake up,LB'ings home is south and if you get really lucky one day all things will align, asea, vanders, makaha, simondo, tankchamp and even me will be there on the same day.

Hell boofy we must have run into one another over the years or at least droped in on one another

The origin8 first went into commercial production when I was working for Mctavish - and it was basically an 8ft (ish) original. It was popular with some of the older/heavier crew who usually rode big mals and were wantlng a smaller travel board for overseas trips etc.
You really need to decide what you want a board like that for I guess - beachies/points/travel or what ? Like the original the board is great for beach breaks and reef breaks but I think that like the original it is a slow and lifeless board on a fatter wave or average point wave. If you want a heavily rockered midlength for suckier surf then the origin8 may well be the perfect board, but I can tell you from experience that a standard 8ball will handle anything that you can throw at it and is a much better allround board than the origin8 in that it paddles better, trims better, noserides better and is much much faster down the line and in smaller waves its head and shoulders better than the origin8.
When I worked at McT I used to surf Broken Head and the Rivermouth at Suffolk in some pretty heavy conditions, and many times I was the only one out on a longboard (eightball) with the shorties and not once did that board ever let me down - and it got me some respect at times from the local shortboard crew. No - I am not talking myself up - I am just making the point that an eightball at 8ft is the gem board and not the origin8 IMO.

If you are a true longboarder and looking for a smaller version of what you normally ride then you should stay as close as you can to the overall shape but drop your length to help you fit into different types of waves but still keep the "feel" that you are used to with your everyday board. A lot of longboarders used to think they wanted to be more of a shortboarder and they went to boards like the carver cos it kinda looked like a bigarst shortboard but was still 7 1/2 foot plus so it should still paddle and surf kinda like their mal WRONG - nothing surfs or feels like a mal, especially a carver ! sh#t don't get me started on the carver

Mate, before you buy a heavily rockered 8ft longboard come and try mine. No - I am not trying to push you onto a Laguna Bay but it will give you an idea of how that kind of board surfs and if its really what you want. If you cant demo an origin8 try to demo an 8ft eightball and then ride my Laguna and compare the difference and then if you love mine go ahead and order an origin8 if thats what you want. I predict though that you will buy an eightball after trying them all.

Bill

Hi Dotcom - jeez tuff question !
Essentially an 8 ball is a fireball but shorter, so if you are looking at anything bigger than maybe an 8'2 then you might as well get a fireball. I am 75kg wringing wet so I reckon that a standard 8ball at 8ft x 22 x 2 3/4 (ish) for my weight - up to about 85kg is probably the best allround longboard (midlength) on the market, bar none. My Laguna 8' is a purpose built board for beachies and big point days. It is heavily rockered but due to its huge volume still paddles well and is quick down the line - basically it is not a cruiser at all and thats not what I wanted it for.
The 8' superfish (pu) is a very fat and flat and fun board - lotsa fun in fact. Its sole purpose in life is to catch waves easily and put a huge smile on your face. The board is a bigarst fish and surfs like a bigarst fish - that is, flat and fast and without a lot of finesse - just easy and fast.
So - if you are an ageing shortboarder I reckon a 7'3 or 8'0 superfish (pu) is your board. If you are a longboarder wanting a sensational allround shorter mal that fits in the car and is just a tad easier to handle in the shorebreak then an 8 ball cant be beaten. If however you are like me and have boards or sups for small days and mostly everyday use but really want a pure beachy board that fits in the car and surfs like a very high performance longboard then a Laguna 8' msj super is your board. I must add though that I have surfed mine in less than 1ft alley and caught a hundred waves and even got a coupla sneeky 5s. (it is 3 inches thick tho)

Even a 6,8 7s supafish is easy to surf, so easy to catch waves with

Cheers mate, nice breakdown, I'm looking at an 8ball atm but there is a near new 8'0 xl on the bay at 1/4 the price. Might be good for a quick November trip to the Goldie.
Food for thought though, thanks heaps

Is the superfish a pu or epoxy ? I have never been overly sold on the epoxy versions of the superfish - dunno why - just seen bad things and I don't think it did an otherwise great board justice. However, at the right price what the hell hey. they are a great board for summer surf on the goldy mate - handle onshore crap surf really well. Just make sure you can get your arm around it too cos they are massive. I am 6ft and pretty long of arm and I could just carry it with fingertips.
