^^^^i agree 100% the last time i was at byron with mac, i had a father teaching his kids to surf. yet instead of taking them to the little bay bit,he took them out to where he wanted to surf. i had his little girl bailing on a 2ft wave 3metres in front. 3 waves and all i had was my arms to protect me. the bloke is a ****wit and i was not the only victim[}:)]

oh do like watching the tourists with hire boards at my local when its closeout city, very funny

I must admit it was a circus when I surfed it with mac and vanders.
Ive never seen a set up like it where boats come in and out through the line up.
Some of the locals were very agressive that day, we wernt close to the main peak and were getting the wider ones that in some cases were a better wave.

Putting leaner surfers out on hire equipment there is madness, only thing worse would be a couple of 666

I trick with the Pass it sit out wide away from the learners and grab the bigger wider ones that DO sneak in,this also keeps you out of the tight point local area.

Agree Mac, sit wide. ^

I wonder if we will ever need a surfing license... Like fishing has now...

Also, recreational bush walkers need to pay National Park Entry Fees / Walking Fees, in some parks. Go to the snow, and you pay for Alpine National Park Entry Fees, usually....

Hopefully surfing doesn't go that way...

Reds if you like, I know it might stir some emotions up !!

I first surfed The Pass in 1990. Haven't surfed it since about 04 or 05.

Anyway, 1990 was 22 years ago !!
Only 22 years before 1990, it would have been happy days in 1968 !!

Makes me feel almost old!

The trick with the Pass is to get there at 5.30am Get an hour and a half of surfing in before all the Queenslanders, Weststarlians,Victorians, Brazillians[}:)], Japs, scuba divers, old croney swimmers who for some reason walk past miles of beach to swim through 60 surfers to do there swim The Pass is a great place to teach your kids to surf in the little bay area you can pretty much run along beside them but taking them any further out is madness IMO

the problem with a wave like The Pass is that its easy access = idiots can paddle out. Same in most places I have ever been in my travels with these types of waves where the so-called surf communities have built up around them. Check Nossa and the Goldie on yr next trip or surf!!!

I like Byron but its a crowded zoo these days....first went there in 2000 and it was busy back then - these days its 10 times worse. Love to have been there when you were Simondo let alone 1968....if only - my elder brother was born but I had not even been thought of then.

If people have an issue with things like this please feel free to PM me as I am heavily involved with surfrider and I can direct you to people who can help voice opinion in these issues and people that you should speak to if you would like to contribute. Surfrider Foundation Australia is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of waves and beaches. So an issue like this is well within our charter and something that we get involved with time and time again.

well said bear

"But add absolute beginners on hire boards to the mix and it rapidly becomes a dysfunctional and dangerous situation for all involved.

It is fact that the majority of hire-board users do not know when and where to move to reduce the risk to themselves and others in a crowd situation. Move them somewhere quieter and the problem will be greatly reduced."

the thing is with the pass you have to be able to surf to start with, if you have never surfed it take 20 mins to sit on the shore and watch how it works. Or paddle out and sit very wide and watch and learn. So frustrating with people who sit right on the break line, right where the wave will go.

other thing is DO NOT STAND OFF UR BOARD and have it parallel to the wave, you get 20 beginners and asians doing this YOU CANNOT GET THROUGH !!!! grrr

end rant

I reckon we'd have half the crowd if learn to surf schools never started,i for one like probably all the breezers had to learn on there own and with no leggies, all i can say is there must be money in it min $50 a head sometimes 10 min students not bad $500 cash for 2hrs, in the wrong job will have to get my ticket.
