Need advice on these as I have never surfed this type of fin configuration before.

The current set up is 6.5 FCS Dolphin fin (I know I said 7.5 in other posts)
With FCS GX-q side fins.

Like this -

Since this pic was taken I have moved the centre fin 1.5" back.

I know its a 6,4 asea but its like a LB

From the MCT website -

Centre finbox with 6” Australian-made fibreglass McTavish fin AND FCS GX-Q dual-density foam-core side fins.

So Im useing the right fins, is my centre fin too far forward?

IMO yes the your center fin needs to go back,a rule of thumb a well known LBer told me is to open your hand and spread your fingers as wide as you can on a tape and what it measures use that measurement from the tail of the board to the rear of the fin.

Doggie - I don't like that fin setup at all, but if that is what you got with the board then you need to move the centre fin back to at least the centre of the box and maybe even half an inch to the rear of centre. Your current setup will have f/all drive and just feel wrong !

The best setup IMO for these boards is 1) single fin or 2) 6inch + slightly bigger sides (maybe M3s)

GX-Q fins were never really made to run as side bites for a 2+1 - they are actually trailing fins for a quad setup (thus the Q in GX-Q)

Having said that though, you will have much better success when you move that centre way back.

I had the center fin about middle of the box on Saturday then when I got home I pulled it apart and its still in bits, waxed up the 6,5 for Sunday then went to the pub.
I can tell you it dosnt like hollowish waves over head high, Im lucky I didnt cop a dolphin fin to the head at one stage.

Definately move that fin back. Maybe try and get a smaller centre fin for it as well.

I was thinking of getting one of those FCS fin converter thingos that converts fin boxes into std FCS fin plugs and try a 3D Red Tip in the rear.

Jeez smh the 6.5 in the back looks small as it is!!

Dunno, got things to try I just need time to try them

It looks too far forward... ^ I agree with above... Try the fin quite central in the box. Probably end up close to where Mac's measurement theory would put it also.

Doggie just keep the current fins mate and whack the rear back, the egg is a retro type shape and you will have to change your surf approach from your shorties.

Now on a more serious note,40 + its time to bite the bullet and get a 901

Yea its a massive difference to my shortboards, I will try the more central possi and see how that works.

Mate Im close to ordering a 7,6 Carver or 8Ball set up as a quad.
Would they do an all over orange like that Involvment model that was at the factory that day?

Surfed a Carver when I was over in Feb, mac knows the one. It was a fun board, I liked that the nose was pulled in a bit. It seemed to really paddle in well and fantastic glide. Dunno, after the weekend my 6,5 is still the best board I have ever owned....

Waayyy too far forward, I'd say a bit back of middle with the fin and error towards the back then the front.

Personally I'd run a 5.5-6" dolphin before I'd run the box converter, I've run one and there rubish - dont' hold the fins well at all.

Took me 6-7 surfs to get it right on my O'Donell, hope it transfers well to the new board.
