It looks like the renaissance of this model had it's genesis in a real live board from the 90s.

http://www.mctavish.com.au/_blog/McTavish/post/Wategos_cruiser/

Isn't it strange how we forget these old types until someone comes along and says "how about this?" "let's see if we can do a modern version?".

Pigs are a good example, and I don't remember too many people bothering about logs 15 years ago, Trackers could be another example, I remember them from the 70s and they didn't look much like the ones we have now.

I guess you could even throw Simmons and twinys into the brew as well.

I wonder what will be the next design to get jazzed up.

Logs really weren't around 15 years back. The boards back then were mostly performance 9 's with heaps of rocker like the McT Blewitt models act. If you wanted to surf old school there was the old mal division in the comps or you tried tried to ride an old beast as best you could. Most old mals were dogs but every now and then a good one would come up . A guy at our club though used to get single fins made up and copied off some of the pig designs with the big fin and the soft rails and he always did well at the pointscores and the local events.
Traditional or progressive its all good.
Have you got any old ones lying around Ob ?

No smh, don't have any old boards around the place, I'm not really a nostalgist, I'm happy for other people to collect them and for me to just look at them, but just recently, I did have to have a bit of a think about those old logs.

The guy who owns my local shop knows that I like to see anything new that comes in, if it's a biggy, so he pointed me in the direction of a circa 1965 Ron he had on the shelf. Probably 9.4 x 22 with a robust 5/8 stringer and fat 50/50 rails with a 6 or 7 inch square tail. It weighed a ton and was as flat as your mums old ironing board.

Now the thing is, I can remember 1965 quite well, I was about 1 year away from my first and only surf for the next 30 years or so and I loved boards.

But what I also remember was what people looked like back then and if you were even 75 kgs, your nickname was fatso so the people riding the boards back then were very different from the people who would try to ride then today.

Maybe that's why there's such a decline in old mal comps.

when i had mine,i found how much i hated it. yeh the glide feeling and all that rot. it was hard to paddle, all this it is easier, well i say bs. oh the glide is fun,if you like to just go in a straight line. then you have to heave the fat bastard around. there is a reason why we progress. like a old ferrari, very very beautiful, yet if you want the most funwell get a new one

I spoke to a shaper a little while back about an 11 footer and if he could make one and he told. Me he'd do me a 16 footer if I wanted one. Maybe a 15'7 would be nice.

Roughly in the following order:

I lived in the western suburbs

We had no money

I wast too young to drive

Short boards came along and I hated everything about them, I still do, I can't stand looking at circus tricks and wiggly bum turns.

I got married

I got a mortgage

I had kids

I raised kids

I sitll had no money

I started to surf then busted my knee helping one of my kids move house

I got into buggies and wasted 10. Years

I had a knee op in 2009 and started again

And here I am.

Yeah, I like it... That concept will be easy to apply to a Longboard Cruiser!

(1 hour in spotlight! - but you gotta do what you gotta do... I think I even said go to Spotlight and have a look... nothin' ventured nothin' gained...)

Poor waves today... Dirtbike Riding instead!

This may sound really silly Mac but I have been getting my material for my board bag creations from Ikea of late....they have some wicked prints. Well worth a stop by I reckon.
