Nice looking glider there! Channels are an interesting addition.

Someone once posted a twin fin glider - that sounds like a fun ride, if the design worked.

Put the Tak Finger fin set up in the Kuhio, chucked a sickie and headed up to the Noosa woods yesterday.
Had great fun. By the end of my extended session, it was me and a SUP on a great little peak that was popping up in the river mouth. I reckon the Kuhio was catching these much easier than the SUP.
Fins worked well in the board.

Ok if you're surfing waist to chest high waves predominately do you think the Prince would be the go to board?

It would certainly be on my go-to list!
I've been loving it in those sized waves, and I haven't ridden anything else since purchasing the board, if that counts for anything.

The bigger the better - don't think these boards on only for 1-2ft waves. They excel in the bigger stuff.

I got my 11'0 Munoz into some fun waves today.

Not sure the Taky would work as well in these waves but the Munoz gets better with a touch of grunt.

Great pics, again, surfanimal!
Based solely on the still images, I'd imagine the Kuhio would handle those waves just fine, but agree completely that the Munoz's 'get better with a touch of grunt'. I'd go as far as arguing that without a bit of grunt, they're not the best choice of board. OK, maybe I wouldn't quite go that far, but they certainly come alive with a bit more push behind them.

Can anyone comment on the sales pitch for the Prince Kuhio?: "This Hawaiian Cross Country glider was inspired by the outer reefs on Oahu's South Shore."
More to the point, can anyone provide insight into the waves on the outer reefs on Oahu's South Shore?
Whenever I've surfed Waikiki, or been in that area, the waves out on the outer reefs 'look' much bigger, but also a long, long way away. Are the waves just a less crowded version of Queens, or are they a bit more of a 'serious' wave?
Long story short, what do those outer reef waves say about what the Kuhio was designed for (outside of a damn long paddle)?

Cheers

And Surfanimal - I've got another question for you, and I have a vague memory that you've addressed it previously (was it an injury?)
And please believe me that it's not a criticism, but why the helmet?
When I surf somewhere like Currumbin, I reckon I'd be much more comfortable in the crowds with a helmet on.
Similarly, these gliders, especially those with a bit of weight, could do a serious bit of damage.
Just curious.

Never been to Hawaii, but my experience with our outer reefs is that they are decidedly bigger than the inshore reefs. For example, there's are two outer reefs I paddle surf where there is a left and a right separated by about 800 metres of dead water. On shore in that channel there is a peak that will be 2-4 foot. If I paddle to the right (with dry hair if I time the jump off right) then it will be 8 foot plus. If I go to the left it will be about six foot. These reefs are about 800 metre off shore. The waves are both way thicker and heavier than the inshore reef. I use 9'6 guns out there so I can get into the waves. I paddle surf a couple of outer reefs and I have towed a bunch more. Pretty much every one of them is a more "serious wave" as you put it.

They tend to like a bit of length in the board as the swell moves faster and the waves don't pitch as fast. They may still go top to bottom, but they don't just hit a ledge and break.
I have surfed one of my gliders in waves that were approaching four times head high (different outer reef to the one I described anbove) and it worked a treat with the early entry. So I'm sure the Prince would too.

I started wearing the Gath about 20 years ago, after my second Surfers Ear operation.

The Doctor (who was a surfer originally from South Africa) explained that once the bone was removed with the surgery, it would return quicker each time if the inner ear continued to get wet in the water and exposed to wind so to avoid it, cover the ear and while it still gets wet, is protected from the wind.

So, the Gath was originally for that purpose but subsequently, I'm now bald so it protects my head from sunburn in summer, keeps my head warm in winter and offers protection from rocks, boards and surfers without leggies etc.

I feel naked without it these days and carry a spare in the boot for that rare occasion I forget to pack it.

Surfanimal - thanks for the response re: the helmet. I know what you mean by 'feeling naked without it' - I've been surfing for the past few years with a tourniquet in my shorts pocket/tucked into my wetsuit. I don't have any overwhelming concern about sharks, but if I forget it, it feels odd not to have it.... so now I have a spare in the car, in case I forget the other one!

Just wrote this to the legend that sold me the Kuhio. Figured a cut 'n paste might be appropriate here.
I went for a surf with the Kuhio this morning at 2nd ave at Burleigh... or more to the point, about 50m south of the 2nd ave entry.
There were about a dozen surfers sitting on the bank straight out from the 2nd ave entrance, on the bank that typically forms there. I couldn't see any surfers to the north, and only a couple of surfers way down the beach to the south. It was surprisingly flat, except for some distinct banks.
I paddled out through what ended up being a very wide channel on the south side of the 2nd ave bank, and on the paddle out, noticed a few waves coming through just to the south of me.
Decided to sit there for a bit, to see what happened, before paddling into the crowd. Turned out that after about 10 min of waiting, I decided to turn and go on a wave that seemed to be too good to be true.
Ended up being so good (and long), that I almost paddled the little remaining distance in to the beach, assuming that it was the wave of the day and there wasn't going to be anything close to that one again. Decided to give it another shot, and caught another 3 great waves in about 20 min. And that was with me taking my pick of waves. Shoulder high waves, and according to my watch, the shortest one was about 120m long, which was damn impressive for the way the banks were.
I'd argue that the other surfers, probably only 50 m to my north, would have been lucky to be getting 40m rides. The board really got some speed today. Interestingly, it seemed that with speed, I needed to be further forward on the board. I was surprised at how much 'grip' the tail had, but that could also be that Takayama finger fin playing a role.
Cheers
