Heavy....
Man speared by board in surf-rage attack

www.couriermail.com.au/nocookies?a=A.flavipes

A MAN faces losing an eye after a surfboard was deliberately speared into his face in a horrific surf rage attack on the Gold Coast.
The victim, Mark Morlock, said it was the ?most brutal and cowardly thing I?ve seen? and ?pure evil?.
Doctors will tomorrow determine if his right eye can be saved.
Mr Morlock, 41, a professional abalone diver and ship?s captain, was surfing popular Gold Coast break Snapper Rocks on Tuesday when the incident happened.
He said a fellow surfer who he unwittingly cut off on a wave at the same break about five months ago confronted him.
?I heard a voice behind me go ?hey you? and I?ve turned around and he goes ?you remember me??,? Mr Morlock said.
?I said ?yeah I remember you, what do you want??. Then he let his board go from between his legs, straight into my face. He said ?you?re not laughing now, are you mate??
?Within six seconds of him announcing his presence, he?d done this horrible trick that only a surfer knows but one I thought would never happen to me. It was the most brutal, cowardly thing I?ve ever seen.?
In agony and shock and unable to see, Mr Morlock made it to shore where he was given first-aid by a lifeguard.
Even as he was waiting to be taken to hospital, his attacker wanted to fight him.
?He was hiding in some bushes and came bolting down the stairs wanting to carry it on, with my eye almost hanging out of my head,? he said.
?I said ?are you out of your mind? I can?t even see you to fight you?,? Mr Morlock said.
He was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital and later transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital where he underwent about 12 hours of microsurgery in a bid to save his eye.
?The doctors told me that if he wasn?t riding a snub-nosed board, it could have been fatal,? he said.
Mr Morlock will find out tomorrow if he loses his sight in the damaged eye.
?It may cost me my livelihood,? he said.
He has not spoken to police but a horrified witness is believed to have reported the incident.
?It?s one of the heaviest things I?ve seen,? one witness told the Sunday Mail.
Snapper Rocks, home of the Quiksilver Pro world surfing championship contest, is one of the world?s most crowded surf breaks and surf rage is rife.
But clashes between surfers usually involve heated exchanges or fisticuffs, with surfboards rarely used as weapons.
?What kind of person carries a grudge like that for five months and then does something as horrible as this to another human being?? Mr Morlock said.
?It?s pure evil.?
Surfers said the attacker was a notorious troublemaker and needed to be stopped before someone was killed.
?The guy?s an aggro serial offender,? one local said.
?There are women and kids who surf out there who don?t need to be exposed to this sort of danger.?

Thats bloody heavy. I can not stand seeing things like this. I hope his eye recovers and they lock the farrrrker up who did it. Dropping in sucks, violence is inexcusable in my world. Sadly I am not surprised to read this though, given the share population numbers of water users up that way the law of averages would suggest that this sort of thing should happen more frequently and frankly I am surprised it doesn't.

Love to know who the offender is??
One of my clients saw the incident happen & told me about it over the phone on Tuesday afternoon, he reckons the victim understandably was in horrendous pain & very distressed, he said the offender just paddled away with a smile on his face. Hope he gets what's coming to him!!!

Absolutely disgusting. We all get annoyed at time but to hold a grudge for that long and then to inflict such a shocking injury is inexcusable.

We don't need people like that in the water.

As much as I'm shocked at this I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often..especially at Snapper and G'mount as the crowds and egos can get out of control...poor bugger I hope his eye is ok and he takes that ar#@*le to court.

Wow..... shame no one who was there was able to grab that feckwits board and shove it right where the sun doesn't shine.... or snap it in two....

Hopefully someone will be able to identify him and he'll get what he deserves.... life in purgatory, where someone drops in on every wave you catch.

Seriously, prison is the only way for this bloke, as it's not a lot different to a coward punch IMO.

got a question for you all

say 6 months ago when the orignal drop in happened, if the guy flicked his board out then or bailed, then it hit him in the eye

what would u all say then?

i dont support what this guy did but i often wonder surfing in byron, with all the drop ins i see, i often think what would everyone think if this event happened and the dropper in'er lost his eye, but ultimately was his fault

i dunno this **** angers me because i see it all the time, but when the person gets run over or cut up from fins running over there back they kick and scream like a baby, at the end of the day you shouldnt have droped in

you dont jump infront of a car, get hit and cry wolf, its ur fault in the first place

as i said, i dont support his guy 6 months later doing that, but at the time MEh

this weeked just past, there was this huge maroi guy and his friend pushing little kids onto waves right on the point at the pass, stupid enough already, he then would push the kid in front of poeple already on the wave.

i approached him after i watched him do it to 6 of the best surfers at the pass that day. The argument didnt get anywhere because the guy was a little 'thick' to say the least, and if he is reading this (suprised if he can read) (please cut ur balls off and dont reproduce for the good of humanity)

anyhow i said to him in the middle of our discussion, if you push your kid onto a wave and someone runs him over and puts him in hospital, you wont be laughing will u.

its exactly that situation i hate because if it did happen, the first thing you would see in the paper the next day, SURFER RUNS LITTLE KID OVER, rather than dickhead in the water pushes little dickhead on to waves infront of surfers already on the wave.

child to be taken away from father as he sucks as a father.

rant over

Intentionally trying to maim or hurt someone is a coward dog act. Flicking boards at people is dangerous and no different to glassing or cheap shoting someone.

the guys next hold down should be in the shower block.

It's a drop in for Christ sake they didn't rape your sister.

All the above!!! There are serial nutters at a lot of breaks, even less crowded ones. Usually the same bloke who coward punches someone.
Hope the guy recovers.

I tend to agree... Jail time, or funds to victim in lieu...

In the legal worker's comp arena, damaged body parts actually have some guide "set values". As in Dollar Values... I'd be guessing that if you lost your eye-sight from a work accident, it might be worth $100k, and maybe up to $200k...

Hopefully the guy's eye is OK!

Not a nice thing to happen. If it was a drop in maybe the guy simply didnt see him who knows? Whatever the reason the poor guy didnt deserve what he got and at the end of the day its just a wave and theres always more coming along... Not good

loss of an eye + you can add headaches, nightmares, depression,
loss of income (may need both eyes for work).
IMHO he would get 250,000 400,000.
thats if the guy that did it has the $$$.
.
Just thought if someone heard him say it just before he did it
and it killed the guy ...he'd be getting life.

as i said a few weeks ago bs, a story i heard a few years ago and i'm assuming it true, even if its not doesn't matter, was a guy purposing flicking a board at a guy who dropped in. the guy lost a eye. a massive price to pay for dropping in

i would called intent to maim a bit different to getting the back of a board run over.

often the flicking is a spur of the moment thing. but as in this case the guy back then was known to flick his board at people.

these guys make their board a weapon

Well speculation is probably not the thing to be doing on something this serious. Lets hope at the very least that this person now understands the grave danger his actions can have on others and corrects his behaviour. There has to be hope !
