1 litre per kilogram minimum is my formula for big guys. Little blokes don't need to worry about volume as they have an excess of it which gives them considerable advantage in wave catching.

An 11' x 27" x 3 3/4" is about 121 litres which is still less than your weight. Unless you are particularly gifted and fit, I would not consider a smaller board.

EPS is more bouyant and light, but it's wave catching dynamics are different to PU. Personally I find that it does not pick up the wave energy as easily as a PU board, but others have different views. If it doesn't have a stringer, it is much more flexible, which I find can bog in take offs and turns.

Good luck.

a litre per kg hey...well **** me.

little blokes have excess litres in their board ? if they are all 70 kg and lighter, and the majority of longboarders would not fit into that weight class..

you have not mixed up 666 with longboards have you?

seriously

Yep Chrispy. The pros ride around 2.7-2.9 kg per litre as a general rule. they Are super fit- mine are normally around 2.5 on a shortie but a smaller ration for longboards for obvious reasons. 1 to 1 would be a nightmare. It would be like a boat. You need it to engage with the wave not sit on top. With an epoxy the advantage is you can have a smaller board for the weight and then glass it heavier to suit. I don't think you will have any isssie catching waves etc with one. I have been riding them for years. Love the way they catch waves I catch lots of waves

You're biggest problem is the blank, once the shaper takes the scab off it, there's often not enough meat left to get 3.5 inches, but there are some exceptions.

A Core industries blank can get you 4 inches, but it maxs out at 9.8 so the best you'll get is a 9.6 board. Plus they come from Tweed heads and it's not always easy to get them to a shaper in Sydney.

The surfblanks 10.4 may be your best bet.

http://www.surfblanksaustralia.com/blanks/longboards/10-4-lb#.WESQA3lf3-c

They have a max thickness of 3 7/8 so if your shaper is carful, he can get you 3 5/8, he will probably need to do it all by hand because it's possible a machined blank will be cut too deep on the first pass.

As far as a shaper goes, there's lots of people that could do it, but not a lot that will, mostly because many of them don't like seeing their name on anything other than a sexy HP board. You may need to shop around for the right shaper, mona vale and Brookvale are good places to start looking.

Get friendly with some local old farts down at the beach, we've all got boards like these.

Burfords do a range of 12ft blanks in variety of thickness/widths now

I was in a shaping bay a couple of weeks ago talkin about a new 10.2 He had one of those 12 ft blanks resting on the wall ready to mow.

He could hardly move around the bay it took up so much space

from a fellow 125kg surfer, ur kidding urself if you go anything under 10'6 ish, and anything thinner than 3 1/2 inch. yes i can ride 9'6 boards too but its frustrating and at the end of the day u have to leave the surf happy otherwise why surf. go get an 11fter or something. There is stacks of them around at the moment from hipsters jumping on the big board wagon and realising their 50kg frames cant ride them. I know mctavish have a few over 10ft boards second hand out the back at the moment for sale around the 1k mark maybe give them a call. But yer go big, and flat, dont get a HP 10fter

I think Vanders has had some bigger boards as he is a big guy. Mainly from Steve Del Rosso amd others. Steve is a big guy as well which helps. I hear the saying that big blokes should buy boards off of big shapers as only big guys really know what type of volume big blokes need. SDR is also very good value with really reasonable prices

Volume can be your friend, it can also be your worst enemy if you don't have a nice channel to paddle out. Thing about longboards is & the dynamics of surface area glide across water is board thickness does not really add anything to glide once you get going on a wave. Reading the line up & placing yourself in the right position is more important & comes with experience of surfing a place you choose to be your local. You just can't beat local knowledge.

I'd recommend a board like 10 x 24 1/4 x 3 if your on fatter waves with a channel. But I would not want to be paddling it out at a shifting peak beachie haha But does sould like the kinda board your chasing

Not assuming your a fat bloke, you could be 6'5 brick for all I know. But just consider blokes like Jimbo could get by with a lot less volume given the right waves.

Good choice, but I reckon the 11 would be enough board for that weight.

I keep my 10.6 stored up in the rafters so it won't get hurt.

Cheers mate, yep sad about Jimbo. Thats why I said Jimbo could get by & not can get by

+1 for the Munoz, a big local bloke has a great time on his sitting 1/2 a mile out further than everyone else & paddling into any set wave he wants.

Hi Mick/Tux,

You will have to excuse my ignorance....

Are there any local stockists for the Munoz?

Wow 3 pages already and we haven't even got into the colour / design aspect. This thread has the potential to out do some of the Prez's board builds

lol. It could be pink for all I care... (I do care..) as long as I can sit on the fkn thing without sinking and catch a wave with it.

I will likely buy others but I want something quickly I can catch some waves on over the xmas break (the one concentrated break of 5-6 days for the next 5-6 months ).

Am going to look at a board BeerDad has end of next week when I return from Melbourne but want a few alternatives in case it doesn't suit,
