Dazzler, I think 8 foot is about the limit for a 3 fin Thruster. At 9 ft, I think Box Single Fin plus side biters is the go.
I like the drive from the bigger single fin. Side fins just enhance the turns, without too much drag when Trimming, etc.
I think 3 fins are designed to be virtually always turning.
I have generally ridden a 2 + 1, however on the recent east swell we had I rode a 9'1 channel bottom thruster with a heap of tail lift. Allowed me to take a drop on my back hand and drive it off the bottom. It was very very lively to say the least!!
I can see Santa bringing a board very similar in December.
One of my mates has a selection of Dick Brewer guns and they are thrusters.
