This ^^. The carbon board doesn't chip or scratch like paint on the typical fibreglass, there's really no need. Especially not with two layers of electrical tape per DJ's excellent instructions. I've had my Evoke for a year and beaten the hell out of the thing with barely a mark.
If you do decide to tape, generally apply the tape a little higher than you might initially think towards the decking pad. If you're gonna scrape it it'll be up where the board is above the water, not under.
