I am 70 kg, 63 yo intermediate and surf up to head high beach break. I have the 8'7" 115 l Creek. Great board, floats me well, good stability. Would have been a mistake to go smaller for me. Likely would have been happy with the 8'10" also. Hope this narrows it down a bit for you. Cheers

my current board is JL 8'7 stun gun. great board once surf goes head high and up but smaller waves not quite enough juice ( or maybe i am just not skillfulenough)

This is the little trailer fin I run on my creek and flow. It makes the boards so fun especially if you like to slide. I find I can really slide the tail on my backside cut backs. So much fun! I've had it into about head high surf and is still very predictable.


I think I paid about 30$ for it on eBay. Well worth it if you want to loosen it up alot!

Hi Dave, that center may make it too stiff, since the channels really give it sticking power.
Check out Nug's tiny center fin above, to loosen the tail a bit.
Mixed with those C-Drives in the sides seems a good combo.

I currently have an 8.4 Creek @ 106lt ( 50yrs and 80kg)
Great board , great stability , my favourite
My other 2 boards are 8.3 & 8.5 around 110 lt and 115lt

Yes.... a smaller center really loosens up the tail on both boards.
I almost always use a smaller center fin these days, unless it get big and juicy.

You asked... so here we go!

I have been working on this, but decided I need more info.
To insure best advice, I really need to know what you like/don't like about your custom.
How stability compares to performance etc.
and what you want from your next board.

Your ordered your custom FLOW a lot wider than stock.
Your volume puts your "weight to volume" ratio at a very floaty 1.62

Was that because you place a premium value stability?
Is your FLOW easy or just about right?

You seem to want to ride a shorter length.
Is that strictly for performance?
I think your X-wide FLOW would really neutralize any benefits of a shorter board.

I want to make sure that you end up with the performance and stability that will make you very happy!

You threw me a bit with the mention of the 8'5 SPEEED.....because it's only 27.5" wide and only 112 liters
That is going to be way less stable than your custom FLOW.

Please give me any info that will help me give the best advice!!

General thoughts on the different design comforts... and how they compare (for me personally):
The FLOW is wide mid to tail, so it is a very stable board in general.
I can ride my 8'10 at 107 kg + winter gear

The ACID is very thin in nose and tail.
While it is reasonably wide in the middle, it needs good skills if you want to go short.
I can't ride my 9'4 in winter gear

The CREEK was my answer to ACID type performance, in full winter gear.
While not a "stability" board, it has a lot of "stability tools" built in to it that make it reasonably stable for a performance board.
I widened the nose and tail and added some foam, to keep them from dipping under as fast as the ACID.
I easily ride my 9'4 in full winter gear

Thoughts on performance (for me personally):

Going short doesn't always mean performance
My 9'4 ACID is much higher performance than my 8'10 FLOW
My 9'4 CREEK is much higher performance than my 8'10 FLOW

I put all the dims together so you can see how they compare side by side:
I put your numbers (in red )next to the CREEK and ACID sizes that would be similar stability to your custom FLOW
I didn't use volume as the important factor.... I used width, because you could go a lot less volume and be fine (IMO)

These are not recommendations.... they simply indicate boards with similar stability to your current FLOW
By numbers alone, you should be ok on:
8'4 to 8'7 CREEK 1.4 to 1.53 w/v
8'7 to 8'10 ACID 1.41 to 1.54 w/v

This is where your answers on stability of your custom FLOW come in.

your creek is really taking my attention just due to it can handle a range of conditions, I think the flow was just a bit floaty and was to easy
defininatly want performance
I think I'd be fine dropping down in width I am a realist and believe you have to be comfortable waiting for waves specially beach breaks .i think I'll rule out the acid and save for creek and speed they both seem great boards I've watched all the videos !!

8'7" Creek with Quoba fins. I like them when it is a bit bigger, shoulder to head high. On softer waves not so much.

I was hoping for a little help and advice please.

52 yo guy, 6'3", 95kg (weight only likely to go up) surfs mainly beach breaks in the UK. However I'm fortunate to be able to travel. In the last 4 years I've surfed in the Seychelles, Costa Rica, France, Morocco and WA. I'm currently using a Starboard 9'5" widepoint which has been a great board, but no good to travel with and now feels a little dated.

As far as skill level goes, looking at the posts on here, I'm a rank amature . I am a weekend warrior. However I can stand, paddle and catch waves in my own unique style (happy in OH surf). I'm no ballet dancer..... front foot planted on the stringer, back weighting the rail as needed (this takes a lot with the WP), being tall I can get on the tail by widening my stance.

I only really have the option of 1 board (to most of you on here...... I'm sorry!!) I'll be in WA January 2020, so thought I'd take the opportunity to buy my next sled.

So my questions are. Do I go for a Creek? Is it to focused to be my only board. I'd really like to, but have no way of riding 1 in the UK. If I do: 9'4" or 9'1" (I'm aware of the advice to go 1 size up). I'd also like your thoughts/experience of the 2 piece construction? The ability to take my own board and not rent would be fantastic.
