Just wanted to share some froth...

I've had the new board itch to scratch for a while now and am looking to get a couple of new boards and then consolidate my quiver back down. They say a change is as good as a holiday...

The thought was to start with a do-anything board for summer point waves and also for big offshore days. The plan is to then add in a new small HP sup when I want to (try to) rip . I'm waiting on the Sunova Ghost to come out before any decision is made there. The SPX and Hipster Pin are the others in the mix.

So for the longer board... I got chatting to Creek and Dylan about how the Point Break looked to fit what I was looking for. I'd also read/watched every post on this forum, SUZ and YT about it. I didn't really consider any other brand for this one as Dylan is so easy to deal with and the model existed already. I've also had good luck with the construction of my many Sunova's over the years and really cannot fault the quality of the manufacturing.

We considered custom dims as I didn't feel the need to go all the way to 12ft and 11ft is the longest that can fit inside my VW Multivan among other storage issues I have at home. So after numerous emails we came up with:


11ft x 30.75" x 170L. When scaled down to 11 ft we added about 1 inch in width (as per Dylan's suggestion) and dropped 30 litres as 170 should be plenty enough. I've chosen the TR3 Tec with a team layup (with a re-inforced deck) to try and get it reasonably light for long walks to remote spots.

The 'Bodhi' name was picked as we all know he was the antagonist in the Point Break movie, Bells is one of my local spots and I want to really pIss off the wave snaking foilers hahaha

In terms of colour etc, what I really like about Sunova is the wood finishes, so have kept it pretty simple and clean.




It's expected to be delivered in Oct, just after my birthday and after I come back from a trip to Bali. YEW!!

Amazing bro! Love the back story to the name haha. Know you've been on a board search for a little while now but this looks like fun- can't wait to hear how it goes. What bottom concaves did you go with?
That Smik hipster pin looks a blast too! I was messaging Scotty after getting both a hipster and new spitty that a combo of the two would be ace and he already must of had that one in the works

The bottom is flat. For a board like this I don't think it matters too much.
Yeah, the hipster pin looks interesting for sure. The SPX looks about spot on to me too. It'll also be interesting to see new Ghost will fit into the mix.

Hoppo,you're reading my mind ,pinching my numbers !,living in that area for 37 years I really miss the mid tide / high tide,fuller waves.where I live now it's always intense and challenging for an older surfer through all tides!I have recently reviewed my surfing priorities, and have adjusted my quiver accordingly my short board is 10 ft and I'm seriously considering something like the bohdi for the long paddle / exploration days.Great name! Hope it's all you are hoping for .

Looks great ,if I was to change anything it would be a squarer tail ,like the search, as a full pin does tend to drag your turns out at that length ,but will be a magic big wave board and I recon you will piss a lot off foilers off on it ,I wish my 9-11 insane had a rear fin box ,I like flat water paddling on a single fin ,less drag than 4 large quads set up .Well done mate and great name .You might be bell 's next big wave board SUP champ on that . Sweet ride .and one of a kind .

Hi Hoppo, that's a beautiful board, just looking at it you can tell how its going to glide into waves and still pull a turn, super nice and one day down the track I might want to borrow your plans

As for a small wave performer don't go past the Smik Hipster, pin or swallow tail, it's my most fun board to ride and will improve anyone's wave riding. It's stable too, so I would look at one size smaller than you would think you need.

Hope your new board arrives soon and the waves play ball too.

heres what shredding on a 12 looks like .it catches everything .also 170 litres .I can surf it better now ,it took a few week s to get the hang of it ,yours will be better ,my search is only a single fin ,it was like going back in time

Tards, i'm always impressed by how you surf the tail well on everything...

Hopefully i've got this new longer board right. I've gone down the custom thing before and had winners and losers. For this type of board though, I don't think sweating on the details matter too much as super high performance is not the main priority. My longboard sup has the same tail as 'Bodhi' so it should be ok.

For the shorter HP SUP boards... it's a different story all together. Probably what i've learned most is for the conditions I usually surf in is, tail rocker matters more than just about any other metric. For what I like it matters more than rail shape, thickness and width (all within reason).

looking at the volume distribution you've got it spot on . my 9'11 insane is 29.1/2 wide ,which is its most challenging
feature ,30,75 will be awesome ,I have been told the 32 wide point break surf way better than the 30 wide 12 search
more rounded rails .But the search is just a fun board ,great for flat water surfs ok .but I recon yours will be way more fun
nice quiv add .The double plugs are a good idea too ,I'm guessing arrival month is late Oct -early November ? I think my SPX is the same container ,thanks for sharing your plan .always good to see a custom come together ,

It's just toooo big for me.
At the moment I've compromised with a 10' Smik Lord Bonza, but I could be convinced to go with this - Any takers for a 10' Lord Bonza out there?

Sunshine coast boards which is also SHQ. hope mines on top ,they usually put all the big ones on the bottom and they always get squashed of course you need a 11 Helmy . its gonna paddle a lot faster than a 10

Sunova still do XXX, but have added TR3 (paulownia). Paulownia can be thinner as the wood itself is stronger, so they can use less of it. As the laminate is thinner and the wood itself is more dense, it absorbs less resin, so will be lighter again. I've also gone for a Team layup with is also lighter than the standard off the shelf build. To do this they still use the same amount of glass layers, they just use lighter weight glass.

I was told that TR3 is tougher for impacts, but XXX is better with compression.

I'm hoping it'll come in around 10kg, where as the standard Point Break 12' in XXX is about 12kg.

My 9'11 insane in TR3 weighs in at 8.7 kgs ,so I think your on the money hoppo with the weight .

my xxx 12 search is heavy ,its build like a brick ****house though ,but wouldn't like to carry it too far .

I might weigh it but recon 11 maybe more ,I prefer light ,that's why I flat water paddle my insane a lot .

Bolted down an order and deposit with SHQ, and just fine tuning the customisations with Dylan now.

Going TR3, and just tossing up whether to do it in the same red/yellow fade as my Creek.
That may sound a bit twee, but I can say is that it won't be bright green!

yes I think yellow and red will look lovely Helmy and whats wrong with green .? Rhymes with Machine

Hoppo, yep, same as yours.
Standard TR3 construction.
Probably red/yellow fade - Dylan sent me photos of the finish on a new Creek in pawlonia.
The pawlonia is significantly cheaper than the balsa XXX - kinda makes it a no brainer I think.

Hopefully I've got in in time to get on your shipment, which will also be in time for Merimbula - could be good at Pambula river mouth.

Well done on crystallising the 11' PB concept.

ha ha.... so many waves lately and new board deliveries that I haven't had eyes open enough to read forums in the evenings..... I face plant on the keyboard when reviewing video footage from the days sessions!

Hoppo, I love your design and I am sure this will knock your socks off!!!
I love the colors of pad and rails..... same as my Ghost V2, except I have added black tint to highlight the wood grain of the Paulonia.

The Paulonia is noticeably lighter than the Balsa.... all my boards are TR3 now.
Since you have gone "Team" on an 11' board, I suggest that you don't get over casual with exposing it to impact.
All my GenRation boards are "Team" build and I take them into all the biggest waves I get with no issue... but I learned years ago to keep all my boards from direct impact. It took breaking 9 surfboards at the same break back in the 80's..... when I broke 2 in 2 hours, I decided to give up breaking boards.

I am very glad to see the two leash plugs.... that is how I spec'd the original Pointbreak

I am also happy that Dylan suggested adding some width... I am convinced that gives the necessary rail curve to snap impressive turns on a big board!

Just to keep your stoke lit about what is possible with the Pointbreak, here is how agile a 12' stock Pointbreak can be with an old man riding it..... I was 73 back then

Sorry, I have not.... would be interesting.
I loaned out my Pointbreak to a customer that had to wait a long time for the container to deliver his.
Didn't want him to wait that long, so I gave him mine until his arrives.
I have a lot of new boards to ride and film, so we are both happy

Thanks Hoppo and STC. I noticed Rick has run 5+ inch thruster set up and quobbas aren't as big but have a lot more going on but how that relates to a 12ft board is the question.
Very close to pulling the trigger on a stock 12ft PB prior to the slow boat sailing from thailand this year hence my interest. Cheers

Some of Sunova boards have the round off deck or domed for when waves brake on the nose so the water runs straight off as not to hold the nose under specially with a longer board ,the flash has this ,worked really well ,my 9, flash was domed right through ,felt like you where standing on a baseball pitch .you could really roll the board over and spring out of white water easily .Your rails look quite rounded too ,so gonna be nice in chop conditions and sliding down 15 foot swell last thing you want is a sharp rail ,the insane have a similar rail ,dropped down some huge choppy swell since I've owned my 9,11 it never flinched or went off line ,it just drove through ,my 8,10 has these similar rails too pictured .
