Not sold on the straps yet will do a few more sessions . I'm finding it hard to keep my feet in or near the straps on take off because I have been paddling with my feet offset from the stringer line for so long.
My advice is to firmly put your front foot in the strap, but leave the rear foot out of the strap.
Paddling with both feet in the straps is quite challenging, you lose a lot of lateral balance.
Plus we tend to flex the rear foot a lot on paddling, since we are facing forward. Having the rear foot in the strap will also interfere with this natural movement and put you off balance.
I tend to put the rear foot just in front of the rear strap, touching it. This way I can feel where the strap is, and easily put the rear foot in the strap just by feel afterwards. Also it is quite easy to move the rear foot around, even airborne, as opposed to the front one.
With experience, you can of course take off with both feet in the straps, my method is to paddle parallel to the beach and rotate the board to catch the wave at the last moment, this is the best I found to have good paddling power, but minimize the time spend in a tricky-to-balance mode.
Welcome to the strapped club! ;-)
