Tradewind 35 in a canter they still make them to order they are so good.
Just not sure about skippers experience with the sextant.

The choices of vessels allowed is just those with long keels of a similar nature to Suhali. After watching the local Westsail 32 trying to sail in light winds I don't think I would want to race one. Same goes for an Endurance 35.
As far as I know the Rustler 36 is still available new. If you bought new you would have to downgrade the rig and sails etc to meet the rules for the race.

I think the Nicholson 32 may just surprise everyone. The yachts have just got out of the light airs and we will see how they handle the fresher stuff.

That's just it. it's a race.

I tried to enter my S and S 34 they would let me which I thought was a bit rough considering the S and S 34 was a production boat at the time of the first Golden Globe.

it seems they picked the worst boats of the era all the dummed down versions of classic timber ocean racers no ss hestias no lion class no tasman seabirds no ss finistere so many great designs of the era taken out

The entrant legal boats are all long keelers. The rudder must be hung off the rear edge of the keel.

What an amazing race, definitely an adventure.

Its still early days but places 1 to 4 are all Rustlers, mid pack are Endurances and trailing in the rear are Tradewinds. The point of this race is the skill of the captains and not the tech of the yachts but the results so far show otherwise, and the price points of the yachts reflect this also.

There is only about 9 months to go but the Golden Globe Facebook page is going to be interesting. Comments about the various windvane steering systems and the hanks versus furlers is of great interest to us more casual sailors.

The Rustler looks fantastic. It looks like an oversized folkboat. What a great "race"! This one is really for the love of sailing not like the speed demons of the VOR.

When you read how the liferaft was ripped off the deck in the earlier post about the loss of the yacht Kelaerin, and then you look at her liferaft mountings, it looks pretty flimsy.

I noticed she has a Jordan drogue nicely packed ready to deploy. Not likely to put herself in the same position.

I own a saltram saga 40. The 36 (and 30) were scaled down versions of the 40. They wouldn't let me enter either :(
I believe these boats were drawn from the virtue class boats. My boat is a great offshore design, but not really a racer. Not sure a saltram made it into the field.

I read today that Susie is worried she has not had a chance to shoot a sun sight for servral days due to overcast conditions and closing in on the Canary islands has her concerned.
No GPS or other electronic devices, the old sextant is back in vogue I see.

Facebook has been excellent for updating info. Philippe should be just about to pass through the first gate. Interesting also is the old technology in theory but the sails they are all using are far superior to what was available in 1968. All seem to favour full battened mains and the spinnakers are outstanding. I doubt whether any of the original boats in the 1968 race even carried one let alone kept them flying like these boats do.
One of the competitors has a fixed 3 blade propeller! On a 9 month race this is going to add 14 days to his race compared to the others.
