that race is a tough race !!!

"British round-the-world sailor Susie Goodall has activated her EPIRB in the Southern Ocean Susie Goodall, one of eight remaining competitors in the ongoing Golden Globe (solo, round-the-world) race, triggered her emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) at 1100 GMT this morning. MRCC Chile is now in charge of this distress situation. Race organisers at the Golden Globe Race have sent a text message to Susie and await her reply. We will update as soon as we know more. Susie Goodall, aboard her Rustler 36 DHL Starlight, is currently lying in fourth place, west northwest of Cape Horn. She is the youngest competitor in the race at 29 years old, the only remaining Briton and the only woman in the race."

Facebook. Opportunity for WA sailors.

3 hrs ?

SALVAGE OPPORTUNITY?? available right now! a BARREL of Famous Irish whiskey!! If you own an ocean going yacht in Perth Western Australia and have a few friends, it is a little over a weeks sail out in trade winds to Gregor McGuckin's abandoned yacht HANLEY ENERGY ENDURANCE now just 1200 miles offshore. Take a two part aluminum pole jury rig and you can sail the boat home too. Everything is onboard and it is finders keepers! It was recently photographed ( below) by GGR skipper Mark Sinclair as he sailed passed the yacht. Position at 17 Dec: Lat/Lon: 32?? 28.19 S, 090?? 18.88 E - 1,250 miles west of Fremantle, Western Australia. The story of the whiskey makes it priceless!! ?? #GGR2018...the tracker is operational so we know exactly where it is. ?

Many sailors have been mentioning trouble with barnacles.
For example Tapio lehtien's Dec 17th post said would take advantage of a calm in the Southern Ocean
to "remove some barnacles if he dare"
Below is a pic of Uku Radmaa's hull.
Makes you wonder about the quality of the antifouling.

It is interesting that Andy Lamont had almost no growth after a similar passage.

It seems there was some sort of balls up with the different boats. Some were of the understanding their boats were to be re antifouled while they were else where when in actual fact they never got the fresh coat. Boats were lifted out and inspected only. One of the things that can go wrong when you don't apply the paint yourself.
Most of the boats have had barnacles though. It's just some of the competitors jumped in and gave it a clean while other competitors had sharks around the boat all the time. The only time the competitors would get to clean the boats is in calm weather. Once there gets to be a build up of barnacles small oceanic fish will shelter under the hull. These will be then harassed by larger fish and they in turn by sharks circling.

100 miles to go!

goldengloberace.com/day-211-van-den-heede-last-100-miles-to-finish/?fbclid=IwAR0eWNwKbpxdiMOFIA9RTEdOZ1L5ADi9orauq7DLnBitWdW8xN5FeSZd9b8

January Yachting World has a brief article about the poor performance of antifoul paints used by competitors. Van Den Heede apparently used 3 coats of antifoul and the last one mixed in copper powder! No mention of brands used and there are comments from Seajet, Hempel and Coppercoat but I don't think these were the paints used. Will be interesting whether the brands will be released in the round up!

Re Ramona's previous post
in actual fact they never got the fresh coat. Boats were lifted out and inspected only.
French port, French boat antifouled and others not.
A language mix up or dare I say it, accidentally on purpose.

Anyway the winner (and it looks like Van Den Heede at this point) deserves all credit and respect.
73 years old to boot.

This bloke is a class act. Just watched the video where he crossed the line under a spinnaker. Lots of photos on Facebook this morning. 211 days and I know he had a few swims to scrub the bottom but that boat is damn clean. 73 years old!
