I am saddened that nobody responded when I remembered our late forum member Eero, who was lost overboard from his Walker H28.
Confession- 20 years ago I was conned by a French woman in an elaborate scam involving $3,000 and a Chanel trench coat. And I thought I was pretty street smart up to then. She was French, and very smart. Used lawyers to accuse me of harassing her when I tried to recover my money.
Felt better when I read in the paper later that she had scammed some poor other bloke out of $250k.
When i learnt Eero was missing, I emailed the police flyer to every flying school and charter operator along the SEQ coast that I could find, asking them to keep a lookout. I spent hours doing this. Never knew the guy, live on the other side of the country, but just wanted to help out, that's what this forum does to you, makes you want to say, what can I do/offer to help out.
When McNautical posted she was contacted by NZ maritime, I dove back into this thread trying to piece together the story to get some facts. My mind constantly swung from believer to doubter, again I spent hours searching the net trying to find anything I could to identify the person or the boat. By the way, there are quite a few "Lady Jane" boats out there, from super yachts to dinghys, one little Dragon class Lady Jane in France does quite well it appears, skipper is an Olympian, I even checked out his 300+ Facebook friends to try and find a Jane, and form a link in a chain. I couldn't find anything that linked this story with a fact that could be passed on.
I may have wasted a bit of time, but I'm glad I at least tried to help solve the puzzle, even in my own mind. Well done Yara, McNautical, Toph and others who actually made an effort to do something, to alert, seek further or disprove what was happening. Sure beats a smug "knew it all along" type.
A heartfelt thanks to Peter and all at Northland Radio NZ for following up on the initial contact and investigating, it's reassuring to know the efforts you guys go to with even scant information to ensure there is no risk that help will go unaided.
If sometimes you get taken for a ride, then so be it, but what I like best about this forum is that 99% of people are here to help, to offer advice, solve problems, point in the right direction, and give assistance; no questions asked.
