The Edge and that style of inflatable kite was still used by heaps of riders in the formula board and TT racing in China, certainly by the majority of riders at least.
The Edge has been refined, bridles and reinforcements have been strengthened as much as they can without affecting performance, but adding weight, by adding reinforcements that look like they are doing something, while actually really only adding weight is always a bad thing for kite performance. The lighter a kite is the better it performs in light wind and direction changes/turning, as well as stability and gust control. Careful monitoring of the weight of a kite in the design and construction process, combined with a top design, produces crisp response and top performance that Edges are known for. Saw one of my mates in Sydney packing up his 9M 2011 Edge, its showing its age a bit (so is he!), but its still going strong and it looks like he will get another season from it!
D2, especially Teijin, is much better cloth, the way each fibre is coated then woven and then coated again as well as the extra ripstop thread is a huge improvement over any single ripstop cloth, even Teijin brand single ripstop.
And Eddy is still going huge on them, this clip is of the new Edge V8
