Despite his rant, to be fair, RPM has stated he is willing to spend time teaching noobs how to self launch/land. Quite reasonable of him.

All this talk about launching, etc.

How about a competiton to see who can launch as many kites as possible in under a minute? A world record attempt? First time in the Guiness Book of WR.
And a comp on who can self launch the fastest, from unpacking the kite to having it in the air.
Turn it into a day's event, with rides for the kids, BBQ, marching band, and a fat mayor thrown in making a grand speech!!??

Just get me out there! The wind is pumping!

On the contrary.....
As a beg / int myself......whLE first learning, I always refused any help from people when launching.

Imagine every nasty possibility of self launching / landing , and I can assure its happened to me. But how else do I learn to get out of those problems or learn to do it if somebody else is carrying and launching my kite for me.??

Infact..... Unless I'm drowning......DON'T TOUCH MY F****** KITE !!

My opinion anyway.

Came in after windsurfing for about an hour and was chatting to another windsurfer on the beach.

Some kiter was standing about 50 m upwind of us and waving then patting his head over and over again.

after about 3 min he came down to us and asked us why we wouldn't land his kite.

Thankfully we dont get to deal this sort of crap in windsurfing:)

Maybe he had an itchy head and he wanted a pole dancer to scratch it?

I have been kiteboarding for over 12 years. And I'll tell you that all the twisted ankles, snapped ligaments and face plants and 500 meter stomach slides I've seen were All from bad self launches. Yes its nice to be able to self launch . But sometimes weed or sticks or rocks can catch lines and send the kite into the dreaded helicopter spiral.Yes, you can pull the safety whilst hurtling thru the air heading for the scrub, but often it all happens in seconds, and you've already been hurled . The last self launch I did the front bridal line got stuck on the tip of the kite and due to the power, folded the tip and stayed there whilst I was being hurled down the sand reaching for the safety. It doesn't matter how good you think you are you will come unstuck oneday. Get assistance at all times if possible and reduce the risks. My 2 cents.

I'm willing to help anyone who wants to learn (except the French) the correct and safe way to self launch and land as it is one thing that isn't taught often.

Please explain to us the correct way to self-launch. ^^^

I believe your preferred method is to self-launch unhooked,

one hand holding the chicken-loop for instant release if you stuff up.

lol.

Isn't this all avoided by self-launching unhooked, per waveslave's post above?
