Over in Qld for the holidays and got the Mrs some lessons to see if she would be keen to take up the sport.

While at the beach watching her lesson I thought I would help someone launch, gave her the thumbs up as I stood by her kite and got a confirmation nod.

Held the kite in the correct position and watched for a thumbs up.

She then pulled her bar before taking up her front line slack punting me, I sat the kite back on the beach and stepped away

She got another person to launch her accusing me of doing something wrong, this person also got punted about 3 metres.

She later approached me telling me off for touching her gear,
If she wanted a launch she informed me that she would have patted her head which is apparently the correct sign,
At my local we must be backwards because that is the sign to land and thumbs up is all about launching.

Being incompetent at setting up your gear has nothing to do with learning to self launch.

What I'm saying is that if you are thorough in setting up, clear lines from under your kite, make sure you are doing it when there is a clear section of beach and have been taught to do it correctly it is very easy and safe.

But it seems that it's all too hard and people are scared. The only reason they are scared is because they can't to it properly.

If you have kite control then your next step should be learning to do it as what are you going to do if your first of last on the beach and nobody is around?

I can't believe we are still arguing over self or assisted launches on the beach. Right or wrong, we should be on the lookout for everyone on the beach, no matter what their skill level.

why not post a selfie, and then we all know who not to ask for a launch, land of our kites. simple ......... oooh and by the way i can self launch & land... and even with my bad habits am willing to help any kiter on my local beeeeaich...

The original post and title I don't think the point is don't ask for a launch or land, it's don't ask while I'm rigging.....and to this I see some value.....in my view rigging and preflighting my gear is THE most critical phase of a session (personally I do this and check at least once, not just that it's rigged correctly but that I haven't missed anything in the gear condition etc.), get this wrong and whether you self launch /land or get an assist, the rest of this is irrelevant as it'll all go wrong for you...... timing is the issue sure ask for a launch or a land no worries, be only too happy but if someone is midway through rigging then I'd wait until they are done...then ask or ask someone who is just sitting on the beach.

I at one stage was a keen pilot in training and got a bit of an interest in how accidents happened so started reading the NTSB and ATSB accident reports for various aircraft types...interesting thing is that a great number of them start before the aircraft leaves the ground generally during the pre-flight, often times in these cases the pilot was distracted during the preflight (someone coming to chat) and missed something or alternatively asked co-pilot to to do some and both assumed other had checked an item which ultimately went unchecked (in at least two cases I have read this included fuel level ). I guess an extreme example but none the less does have in my mind some similarity, so do what you will with it 2c for the grinder.

Oh Gilloo, I'm willing to help anyone who wants to learn (except the French) the correct and safe way to self launch and land as it is one thing that isn't taught often.

This way they can pick up a new skill and get on the water sooner without the need for someone to hold their hand.

Maybe Waveslave can reintroduce his launch pad???

It's a case of learning to share the beach. ^^^

The mums and dads and kids are johnny-come-latelys.

Before the families discovered the north-facing beach which is my local,

the spot was unoccupied for decades ....

except for the poleys and the baggers and a few fishers.

lol.

Now we must learn to share.

We need to co-exist.

Right ?

The LaunchPad (patent-pending) is the responsible method of self-launching on a very crowded and confined family beach such as my local.

Do you have any specifications or pictures of the waveslave launchpad for the uneducated seabreeze punters?

With today's crowd funding potential there may be someone who can get this project going!
