Yesterday arvo we witnessed an accident involving an intermediate kiter and a group of innocent turists.

It happened in front of my eyes, was 3m away, straight on the impact path. Unfortunately, the young women, a turist from China, was badly injured and her life is now changed forever.

The kiter jumped a few meters before the concrete barrier with a fence, where the footpath is packed with people watching us on the water.

At that moment there were 6 people watching, including myself, when the kiter misjudged the jump, went over the fence, and 'moved' all people on the path, first hitting the wooden fence with the board, than bounced off and directly hit the women. Than smashed into the ground, his head missing the pole by a few inches.

The lady suffered an open broken leg, potential brain concussion and bruises. The 3 of us administrated pressure on the wound, and applied bandages. She was in the shock, shaking uncontrollably. Her husband did not speak any English, which did not help either.

The kiter seemed to be injured but with no physical evidence through my eyes.

It was decided not to call an ambulance since the turist couple was not insured, as I understand. The decision was made to drive her to Charlie's and at this stage it is unknown of her well being. It is also unknown how much they will be out of pocket and if the kiter has KSA membership and insurance.

On this occasion, I feel morally objected to report this in here. There were a number of us, older and quite experienced kiters there. We all know each other. This was bound to happen, and yes, I used to jump high, 4-6m, near to a footpath in shallows.

I also call WAKSA/KSA to somehow warn people not to jump near PeliPt footpath. One bad accident, and this metro spot might be off limits.

Unfortunately, people will continue to jump and we have no means to stop that.

There was a knob jumping about 2m from the beach all afternoon at Corro a couple of months ago. He was abused by beach walkers, windsurfers, kiters etc - and every time he smiled and waved with a bit of a smartarse look and then continued to do it. I mean how dumb are some folks?


Some of these c0cks are going to get us ALL banned. Do we really want licensing and mandated pfds/ flares/ exclusion zone of 100m from anyone walking or in the water etc...?

We, as a community of windsurfers/kiters @PeliPt, invested a significant time in negotiations with a local government and City of Perth Parking to keep this site open and free of parking fees.

It was not easy to achieve that and I thank everyone involved from this forum as well.

On this occasion, the fatal tragedy did not happen for both parties involved. The kiter is an exceptional individual and the post is not against him. Accidents do/will happen.

Was it preventable? Absolutely.

A few yellow buoys with a pic migh indicate that, how is that for a start?

Wow Dean, since I've been foiling I dont get to Peli anywhere near as I used to.But every spot seems to have that one or two people who just have this desperate need to do everything close to shore, short tacking, always staying close, blocking' launch and land areas. It is just nuts. I'm spending much more time at Melville as its better for foiling, and theres one knob who basically touches the shore every run. As he turns to go back out he looks to scan the beach and see who might have seen him. He's not actually really even any good. We've all told him. Every spot has them. It's just not that hard, but some people live in liittle bubbles.

Hope the lady ends up being ok, and whoever the kiter was is ok, and has learned a lesson.

Hard to tell. That would be two ambulances, if the perpetrator expressed his acceptance to do so.

We cant force someone who is conscious to do anything against her/his will.

Yah, agree completely. I would not want to think that the people there made the judgement not to call an ambulance so things didn't escalate or make the situation worse for the culpable.

She was in the hospital in 10 mins. Which is 1.5km away. You well know where Charlies is.

Last time when the guy broke both his ankles on Woodies, the ambulance could not find them. They went back.second one come after 1 hr....Enough said.

i suggest you to break something on a beach and hope they will find you. This is not an house number, or a car crash with police everywhere.

While on it, do you have a KSA insurance? No? Well than. Who will cover the expenses than?

Will you offer to pay when calling for a service? Yes, no?

I went back and re read it, the guy jumping was a local dude.

If ANY of you have had any medical emergency training, (and by the way, you should if you are involved in active sports like kite surfing) you would know about stabilising a victim and letting the paramedics do their thing. I do get that it's frustrating trying to get a call through and giving an exact location sometimes, but the risk of permanent damage or death is not uncommon by moving someone the wrong way. As far as cost of an ambulance is concerned it should NEVER enter the equation when a life is at risk. Paramedic treatment is cheap when all things are considered.

"Exceptional individual"? Perhaps.
But also a massive, egotistical idiot. He almost killed someone, severely injured her, and utterly destroyed that couple's hard earned holiday. Who knows what lingering physical/emotional problems she might have.

Accidents happen, but from how you described it, this was totally preventable. Yet another Rockstar being a d**khead. It's a growing plague.

As for the ambulance...you just call one. As someone else said, you have zero capacity to assess whether there are spinal, head or internal injuries...for both people.

That's the point, he is liable he has to cover her expenses. I believe everyone there just trying to cover for him. If I'm barking at the wrong tree then prove me wrong, will this kiter assume fault and try to at least cover for her expenses?

This is getting very emotive in regards to calling an ambulance.
Firstly let me clarify I cant stand show offs who jump right next to shore, stand in shore in a crowded area and f#ck around with their kite in the air while they have a lengthy chat. Short tack in front of people continuously etc, etc.
BUT
Calling an ambulance is a judgement call by the people who are there at the time not keyboard warriors.
If the injured party does not want an ambulance and refuses to take it (for whatever reason) the officers will not touch them anyway.
If the person is mobile and injuries are manageable then taking them to hospital instead of calling an ambulance is a very sensible and logical step. ESPECIALLY if it is a couple of minutes away.

When I think of the injuries sustained by myself and bystanders over the years where we had the common sense to assess, apply first aid and transport to hospital, I think that some people here are being irrational. How many MTB accidents I have dealt with. Call an Ambulance, Yeah .... fat chance.

I am a safe kiter but I try stuff all the time out of my skill level but well away from shore. However I have made mistakes every kiter I have every known or met has also made mistakes. I hope this guy takes responsibility for his mistake.
