After listening to all of Felix's raving about Firewires I've gone out and bought Firewire 6'0 Flexfire with carbon reinforced deck(home job) and after trying many different types and shape of boards I have to agree with him, its simply the best board I have ridden.
Alex what are you trying to say about Felix? Spit it out mate.

Just that defining the worlds best kitesurfers in a stictly "surfing" context is alot harder than people make out. Just because you are lucky enough to get paid by a flysurf brand to do it doesn't necessarily mean you amongst "the worlds best".

In my personal opinion there are tons of other kitesurfers in austrailia that rip way harder than him... and thats just Australia. e.g. Stuey, Ryland, Kav... etc. the list goes on. People that actually rode unstrapped from the start.

I guess a better question could be, "how many people can be in the group of the worlds best"? haha.

All the credit to him though, he's managed to scrape through and make a life out of it and been lucky enough to work with top brands and get sponsored by Billabong...

how did you reinforce the deck??

I put a layer of twill weave carbon + 4oz glass over the top running from about 5cm behind the rear footstrap to about 20cm from the front strap and to the edge of the balsa rail. Its a made it a little bit stiffer but still good.

I gotta say even my arch nemisis Paul.J outshreds him.
I guess its who you know and how you talk as paul menioned. You need the whole deal to make it.
He does talk about himself non stop, I guess someone actually listened.

Just wondering who are you guys going to write off next? Must be all the dust in the air yesterday getting into your heads. You don't get countless Mag. covers, spreads, articles vids ect or sponsorship from surfing co. like Billabong and Firewire for just talking it up! Felix talks the talk and walks the walk, unlike some people on this forum who just talk and talk and talk......

Like to see all you so called "rippers" achieve anything. How many events have you won? Talk is cheap...

And don't get me wrong, I certainly ain't bagging anyone - I think its great what Felix has achieved & as far as I'm concerned he is one of those rippers...Just saying there are a heap of other guys out there ripping as well.

And you certainly don't need to win events to rip. Just look at all the guys in surfing that rip but never compete. Rasta is one of them that comes to mind.

Serious kiting in waves is not that hard if you can surf half decent and have very good kite skills then its not rocket science.

No ones saying felix is **** but hes just like 100 other guys who rip. It also helps that he was around from the start of the sport. Good on him i say.

How to get a cover: 1 send in good photo's
2 Have a sponsor who advertises in the mag
3 Be mates with the guys who run the mags

You can even avoid no1 some times, just look at the latest KBM (sorry Beaver but pretty average shot)

Firewire boards: I have a very good friend who fixes boards for a living and he recons he would never buy one and he should know for how many he has had to
fix. Various reasons mainly delam but heaps of breakages. I don't ride them so only taking his word on it and from the one he has shown me

when are you guys actually going to read the content of a post and take in the information that is written down as it is instead of twisting it into what you want to hear so u can bitch about someone else bitching? i dont see one post where felix is being bagged or ripped.


all i see here is people stating that felix isnt necesarily one of the best and there are better riders out there and that felix did good for himself by making a living out of the sport. I also see people saying the way he can sell himself is what separated him from the others. nowhere does anyone ever say felix is **** and cant ride.

this post started as a question about firewire surfboards being adapted/modified for kitesurfing.

has any info actually been shed on what progress has been made on shapes/durability.

i don't think nev hyman with his experience with shaping is looking at turning out lemons.
personal attacks on felix seem a bit feeble......the guy started as a teen washing dishes at night and he now enjoys life as a professional sportsperson.

i'm looking forward to the firewire product...good to see some solid surfing background entering into kitesurfing.

I have nothing to do with nev; but I think that is a bit unfair. Lots of poly and epoxy boards suffer damage and/or break to. They are pushing a different technology and have won awards in doing so. They had a demo day here recently; and their new surfboard range go well. At my mates shop firewires now outsell channell islands, JS, webber, and DHD etc even though thay can't match them on price point.
btw- I fully support the locally made industry as well, thay are turning out some killer boards atm.

Gotta agree with Jacko again here.
My mate fixes boards, and one of the top things that come in are firewire, said it reminded him of solomon S-core boards (i think they went bankrupt?) And really thats saying something because i dont actually see that many people around here surfing them.

From what Felix has told me is that he got a bunch of prototypes a couple of months ago over in Hawaii and they are all holding up really good, with all different guys riding them and the feedback has been really positive. Tobes took 2 to Fiji with him and so far so good. So hopefully Firewire has reinforced them well and they might be onto a good thing.
