Been watching a bit of shark week also.
A story on GWS on the west coast of the US had some interesting conclusions mainly from those pop-off tags.
In the winter many males head to "Shark Cafe" halfway between California and Hawaii (to hang out and feed on squid?). The females head all the way to Hawaii (who even knew Great Whites were found of Hawaii?). Some females then head to Shark Cafe, too feed and hook up presumable. Gestation time is unknown but could be as much as 18 months. The females that stay in Hawaii are assumed to be pregnant already and the warm water saves energy helping gestation.

Pretty cool I thought.

Using the 10 years of dorsal fin photos the same show also estimated that the GWS population off West Coast numbered about 220.

Not really on topic but I've typed it now so might as well post.

I like that fact some people are actualy learning from this thread even the fact that some are googling there facts from places such as Christmas Island...etc....it's showing a real turn around from the cull cull approach as its possible people are realising that's not going to be a option in the near future.

The fact is that the sharks are in the sea and we enter there domain. Like I said from the start technology and education is the only way in the short term we can live together.

Ironic shark week is running docos on GWS and it seems they are all about tagging with Accustic and pop off tags which is all to do with pole tagging and fairly basic technology using satellite transmissions....this is not real time tracking as real time tracking needs a personal GPS bolted to the the animal.

Diving company's are closing down and beach uses seem to have a bit of paranoia going on so I belive the stranded attacks will actually decrease now over the next few years Until a good option of alarming people if sharks are in the area and people feel safe again. from the start of this thread I gave this option ...technology, education and warning alarms but it seemed most where to angry at the time to understand this is our options.

I still think 1 death is unfortunate but from 2.5 million in WA over a 12 month period seems the odds are still on our side not the GWS.

P.S if you watching Shark week I'm on the occasional doco with tagging in Australia.

Geez you are so full of it.

There hasn't been any turn around by anyone here, no one bagged the tagging and you're not the only person who had that idea, so you can stop congratulating yourself for that.

The people who want culling still want it and that's due to the fact that the 'authorities' have squandered the tagging budget with no results.

I never said I wanted culling, but I can understand the call for it and wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I still disagree with you that the numbers of GWs haven't increased due to being protected, but am willing to admit there is no evidence to show either way, something you can't do.

You haven't changed or learned, and are still narrow minded enough to think that less people in the water is a good thing.

You certainly haven't learned anything about statistics.

Tagging is not a short term solution, but that doesn't matter cause you seem to have some sort of vested interest in it.

Would you kindly explain your experiences with GWS Other than the googled information you are providing us with? How long have you been associated with GWS studies ? have you actually ever seen one in real life? What sea experience do you actually have? This would be much appreciated ...cheers

I'm curious - is your's a speaking part, sharing insights with we who haven't seen a great white through a dive mask? Maybe you drive the boat? Are you the bloke applying the tag? You're not the marine biologist...hmm, maybe you're the one I think of as the teaser, y'know, the chunk-of-tuna-on-a-string guy?

Actually, you know, this really isn't about you... don't worry about it.

He does have a valid question Kiteboy. You talk the talk, so why not share your experience?

Me i have been sailing in the water since i was 1 week old. Surfed since i was 13 years old, worked almost directly with Fisheries, Water police and many commercial operators over the last 20 years. Have had a interest in sharks after reading the "Shark Attack Files" as a boy of 14. Have spoken with just about anyone who will talk to me regarding sharks, including victims, so called experts, both locally and internationally.

I have been very surprised at times as to some info given.

One of the big studies i did (A long time ago) that made me see something in a different light from how it was sold in the media/theoretical world, was the story of the Indianapolis Fear and scare mongering sells and sadly the truth is a lot more tame in reality..

Kiteboy, you find any refugees in your back yard I guess thats part of the question. Southace has real time experience and has explained that. It would be like me telling you how the refugee issue is on Christmas Island. I would think your experience would be more real time experience than mine would..So feel free to answer him

(It really isn't of any interest, other than the fact that you have challenged his credibility, but offered nothing in exchange. Thats all)

I don't need to beat my chest and proclaim how awesome I am, you guys are doing a good enough job for everyone.

Some of us would like to discuss the issue at hand and possibly explore all options, but if you two want to go on like broken records, perhaps you should get a room together and do it in private.

I like this bit

The company is currently designing a device that will assist Commercial Fishermen retain more of the fish that they catch. Twenty to thirty percent of the Commercial Fishing industries catch is destroyed by sharks.

They say later in that the sharks are destroying the commercial industry because the sharks are killing all the fish

But yes interesting, i hand't heard about Sharkstopper.. I guess there could be loads of products out there. I do like Katana's set up and the videos he has on his site are fairly conclusive

Yeah, I prefer the personal device aspect rather than the protecting the commercial fisherman's wallet aspect.

The surfsafe thing looks good, imagine something like that used in conjunction with an acoustic thing like the sharkstopper.
Double whammy on the sensory deterrent devices could be twice as effective.
