A great white jumped out of the water at Mandurah today

There's something quite odd about it. All happening in one bay of the Whitsundays (where i have swum etc many times over many years). It does see a lot of boat traffic, even for the whitsundays with cruise liners even anchoring there. My theory is a bit of conditioned response due to easy feeds. More sharks in area maybe means more aggression.

people shouldn't be going in to the water at SHARK FARKING FEEDING TIME (Sunrise/Sunset for the idiots).

Cid harbour is where a lot of bare boat charters spend their last night before heading back into Hamilton island...... at the end of a charter with a fridge/freezer and pantry still full of meats and food where do you think that food ends up ? It attracts fish which attracts sharks .
when I am in the Whitsundays I never swim off the back of the boat at the anchorages even at snorkelling spots I take the tender into the beach first.
this was the advice I was given by an old bloke about 15 years ago.
Other people I have taken there think I am just paranoid I don't stop them swimming but explain my reasons for not doing so. If I'm desperate I will just dip in at the ladder.

No it fishes well as do a lot of the whitsundays. Theres lots of visitors but hardly any try to fish and even less have an idea. Yes the poo does go overboard which really does add up and is all very attractive burley.
And yeah lots of pissy sundowners and swimming off the backs of boats quite a way off shore as its shallow and quite dirty water. Harry potter all good what you do but vis is the main thing with clear water being infinateley safer and i have no hesitation swimming off the back at turtle bay or whitehaven in clear water. The young girl the lost her leg recently in cid was bitten swimming in shallow water off beach.

I agree there are soooome fish in cid harbour but have dived there a bit (on the old moorings 96-98)and the amount of fish as compared to other areas near their is desert.

as you can see their is a standard response which as humans we can't figure out

So in summary:
- Cid Harbour is usually the first night and last night for most bareboat charters making it party central?
- People pump out their holding tanks and throw their food scraps overboard making it chum central?
- Someone swam in deeper water at dusk

And people say that the sharks are the problem and the solution is drumline

Don't get me wrong, I reckon all aggressive sharks are bastards ........... so why tempt fate and swim where (water full of food and bait fish) and when they might be active (dawn or dusk) ?

Listening to the Abc news at 5:30 am today and the news reader said that he was paddle boarding at the time of the attack.

As far as I know he was in the water at the time and not on the paddle board. BIG difference .
I emailed the Abc for clarification on their story cause I'm sure they got it wrong.

The news article I read said he was swapping the SUP back and forth with another lady. She had just jumped on board and he had just jumped off into the water.

Believe it or not, the political solution appears to be no drum lines, some additional research funding and increased consultation with stakeholders, plus additional "no swim" signage and a "no swim" area declared in Cid Harbour until more is known about what's going on.

But true, the QLD opposition leader has advised that drum lines are the answer .............. I mean she'd be a world leader in shark research and would know all the answers right??????

Yes of course it's sharks stupid.

Stupid people putting themselves on a platter at dinner time in murky or dodgy waters and saying "have me for dinner" and then complaining to the authorities when nature works perfectly.

Or stupid people saying drum lines achieve anything other than a string of dead sharks when there's no evidence drum lines work.

There have been plenty of shark attacks recently in areas where there are drum lines.

Another fact by adriano. Its debateable not fact, with the consensus that drum lines help. Thats why we have them. And they kill f.all other marine life. I guess It stands to reason some doc martin wearing leftard from Mornington knows better about Qld marine science, sharks and drumlines.

Little side topic. Lumped into the recent shark issues a chinese man and his 5yo kid both drowned in the airlie beach council pool (we call it the gene pool because of late night backpacker activity) in the middle of the day amongst heaps of people with 2 lifeguards on duty. The lifeguards are even briefed to watch asians as they wont ask for help even when drowning. How the hell can that have happened? If u have ever been there the amount of people on any day. Its staggering. The dad must have drowned first but even so how did it fo unnoticed. Bizzare

Yeah, help attract sharks and kill many other marine animals in the process.....the fact is it's debatable drum lines achieve anything at all

I agree stupid people will debate this for ever but until the facts demonstrate drum lines do anything other than kill sharks and other sea life critical to the ecosystem, I'll stick with the facts myusernam. You stick to the emotive, old fashioned and ineffective drum lines.
