CID Harbour not a high risk beach in a populated area. It's part of a large water body open to the ocean.

"Taking out the sharks responsible." This statement is as dumb as the fictional characters who thought they could catch the shark responsible for the deaths in Jaws the movie. It just never happens for certain.

This is the nonsense about drum lines in open waters. You might take out a few sharks, but pull the drum lines out and plenty more will swim in hours later. Many more will simply miss the drum line and swim through anyway - like in Ballina.

It's a waste of time.

But what would I know about shades of grey when I'm being lectured to by someone who quotes Wikipedia as fact but then ignores the footnotes, who generalises about Melbourne and Victoria as quote "a shxt hole" after having lived there a few months and calls people ignorant asses and dxckheads.

Yeah, you really do have a balanced way of looking at shades of grey myusernam....

I suspect the political solution will involve more drum lines amongst other more effective and no doubt less talked about measures - but not because the Labor government thinks drum lines achieve anything other than to appease stupid voters who think they work.

100% Dave kelly told a group of maybe 60 people that exact comment. That they did it to shut a loud small vocal group down south plus the federal political pressure to make them look bad.

knocking a few sharks on the head here and there is only going to help the exosystem

Your argument of less sharks means less interactions, couldn't knock some surfers on the head and have the same result, also would be better for the surfers left, less competition for waves A win win

haha I would be very wary of putting my opinions in the same camp as dave kelly. Ive met him and the guy is a certifiable moron and proof positive that any chump can make minister if they are backed by the right faction.

Im chiming in from Durban South Africa again where I remind you there have been no fatalities in 40 years on netted and drummed beaches (thats down from 140 deaths previously) Guess the "science" that they dont work is being selectively used by some. what a surprise. if you say it enough some of those stupid people start to believe it.

a storm here took out one of the nets this week. action was to close the beach till it could be replaced. Not much doubt the marine biologists here think the nets and drums do a bit more than appease stupid voters and ill back their credentials over your hero dave kelly's every day of the week...
