beer bottle bashing. The couple were lured to the beach to collect
the girls handbag which was lost and handed in to the police.
The indon copper organised a night meeting on the beach to
rip the couple off before giving the purse back.
Boyfriend took umbrage and hit the pig on the head, he died.
Lesson is, indons are trying to rip, rort, screw, whatever they can.
The policeman should have met them at the police station to give
the purse back, not on the beach at night to collect a bribe.
The poor boyfriend will get life, the girl's life destroyed, the pigs
family have lost their patriarch, all good third world stuff.
Stay away from the place kids, leave drugs alone wherever you are.

well the corruption does happen and their police force is pretty dodgy (byron bay couple with voyer cop)
but it certainly doesnt help when they reinact videos and then put them out there that show drugs being planted.

I believe that the going rate for a police job is around $40k. That's how lucrative the position is.

Re thinking in hindsight. It was maybe a similar and usual set up.

The kid got the drugs, could have even been a gift from a local. But he was targeted maybe. He was clean dressed, looked respectful and once he had the drugs, he was then "Random" checked, and bingo bango a bribe is paid and he's off. If things go bad and press gets in involved the drugs that were originally supplied being not criminal means he gets to walk and no local gets implicated. rather smart set up maybe that seems to be all to regular..

As for people suggesting we are racist for talking about corruption, its simply part of life. My understanding is police will even pay money to "Own" a particular spot..

If you don't know about the no helmet/international license scam you should probably do a bit more research into your travel destinations! This one has been going on forever. Don't blame them really, they see thousands of dumbass tourists flouting the rules and know that they'll never pay the fine so they try and get a few bucks out of them to smarten them up a bit.
You'd probably do the same if you could get away with it!
Most of the Balinese wear helmets all the time these days, it's the tourists that don't and generally ride like tossers.

If we Aussies are so perfect, why bother to travel to Indos? If it is such as "turd country", why soil yourself by even going near them ? Is it because we actually wanted some of what they have ? Things we can't get at home readily ? I wonder what the Indos think of Aussie. If we don't throw our money around, you think they want us there at all ? Being rude, crude, and out of control ? A bit of perspective. Looking into the mirror at times does help, I reckon.

Balinese cops are crooked - they do it everyone who isn't Balinese. Need to have your wits about you when dealing with them.

I was recently over seeing my brother who lives there with his wife who is Javanese. We took off In his car heading to Jawa & she followed a day later in a private van, they both warned me not to hold anymore than 200,000rp in my wallet, passport ready & stash the rest of my cash.

We were lucky & were pulled at up large police roadblock & let through without issue. My brother's wife was stopped twice by Balo coppers in groups of 2, when they saw her ID card & that she wasnt a Balo they demanded a bribe.

As stated above the Balos buy their way into the police.

The coppers in Jawa are pretty cool & don't demand bribes every time you drive past them.

Reality is every night countless tourist including many Aussies do drugs in Bali, I've been with guys in Bali that just want to get high and despite the penalties if caught, have bought anything and everything of dodgy guys in the street which normally turns out to be fake or of very poor quality drugs.

Fake drugs in Bali are honestly possible more common than real stuff in Bali especially if bought of the street, fake pot, fake speed, fake cocaine, fake ecstasy, even fake mushrooms and they all look and often smell exactly like the real stuff even the pills look real with logo's smily face's etc.

Why?....Because it cost almost nothing to make, the dealer sells it to a tourist for a cheap price but actually makes more than if he had sold real drugs, and it's highly unlikely the tourist will see the dealer again.

The min wage in Bali is about $100 AUD a month a fake dealer (normally young guys from Java) can make that in a night selling fake drugs.

As for the guy getting caught riding without a helmet and licence both illegal in Indonesia, yeah he had to pay a bribe of Rp200,000 (about $20 Aud) now technically yes he should get a ticket and actually appear in court, but he wont be around too do that, so what do you expect the cop to do?...Just let him go?

BTW. if he got a ticket, he was he would easily be up for more than $100-$150 Aud and waste a day in court.

Off course most of the time even Indonesians pay a bribe, which is basically paid for the benefit of both police and person caught.

In this case the guy was obviously in the wrong, no helmet on him or his passenger, no licence and then had the gal to argue the case then complain when he had to pay $20.

Yeah sure you have a right to complain if you are not breaking the law, but when you are and are clearly i the wrong, then do in rome as is done and pay up and be happy that $20 is nothing because to most Indonesians it would feel like losing a lot more than $20.

You have done a good job, Japie There were some doco/entertainment on SBS about Brits went to Greece to get off their faces. No rules, no shames, no ideas. If Aussies behave in similar manners in Bali, I don't think Indonesians appreciate us that much if not for the money we brought in.

In Bali the salaries are so low (no minimum wage, some get $ 50 a month) that the cops, custom officers, gov. employees, public servants take bribes to be able to buy food, pay rental........ it is a normal way of life.
I went to Bali several times, I always hire a driver for my stay and at the end pays him double what he asks so he get some money for him and his family after he pays for the right to drive tourists along (a bribe he must pay to who ever lent him the cash to buy a car). Most peeps are descents and won't rip you of.
One of the drivers I had refused to come and eat with us inside the restaurant because he told me I needed not to pay for him as the restaurant owner was looking after him for driving customers around (another bribe).
Bribing is the way of life in Bali.
One girl I met many moons ago in Bali (not a hooker boys ) invited me to her "room" she was very proud to have a place that was hers. I had tears in my eyes when I saw it....... was very clean but was at the back of a ware house, dirt floor a bed (sort of) one chair, and a bamboo mat on the floor. No ceiling just the high roof so time to time a creepy crawly would fall on the floor, mind you little lizards were dispatching very fast.

Yeah, I asked my driver about this. He said that police is a good job but they are incentivised and need to make up for the initial outlay. So I offered to pay his way into the "force" for an agreed split return ( on investment ). Imagine owning your own little police force, with an endless stream of dumb aussies to milk.
He rejected my offer stating he'd rather be able to sleep at night.
