Hey Jedibrad, once you try the lower volume its very hard to go back to foiling what feels like a bus! :) and the -10L boards are still very paddleable, even the 33L I use is paddleable - although yes, definitely not as fun getting home when the wind dies.. Great surf paddle training :)

Mmmm got a visit from a medium size hammerhead today. It swam beside me and sussed the foil then left. I was glad I was on the sup ??

Probably thought "nice head, nice tail, but what a god aweful skinny body"....

I used to sneak up on the little black babies ones all the time at Umina, my only thought was where is Mum.

I am also a beginner (about a dozen sessions) and recently went from a +40 L board to a +20 and found it quite a bit more difficult to do a kneeling start during lulls. Lots more falling off the board for sure. No problem during gusts. Much more fun when foiling. I am ultimately going to settle on around +5 L. I feel I will lose low end if I go negative. It all depends on the wind quality at your location.

I'm 78 kg. First board was 5'8" Blue Planet Carver at 114 L (+36) and 8.4 kg. Current board is a full Innegra 5'1" FoilSurfMachine wing board at 90 L (+12) and 5.7kg (no straps or inserts). I think a Fanatic Sky Wing 5'0" is 75 L and weighs in at 6.6 kg (with straps and inserts). I'm happy right where I'm at,........hopefully for at least another year!

Did you notice an improvement when you moved to the small board? Swing weight/Carving etc etc

Yes, definitely. You wouldn't think 2.7 kg and 7 inches would make a noticeable difference but it did. Also, it's not just the spec numbers. I like the rail design on the newer board better. The rails have more volume by incorporating a more shallow bevel. The board looks a little more boxy but it just works better. A drop of 24 liters and it was just as easy to knee start. That being said, I'm in no rush to downsize again anytime soon. Wood rather keep improving my skills first

I'm basically I'm the same boat. Went from +40L to +10L (both FSM boards) and the 5'1" is perfect. I will likely part ways with the +40l if I can learn to SuP paddle a small board.

As the sport is progressing fast any new opinion about winging a negative volume board ?

I can knee start my wife's board at -15 liters. If I was younger than 66, I'd probably be riding -10 or -15 as my everyday board.

I'm guessing you need more wind to get going than a +15 volume board? I'm wanting to downsize from my +20L board but don't want to loose bottom end. At 70kg I need a 12-13 knot gust to get flying with my 5m

If you look at the most recent wing specific boards, the trend is to keep more volume in board width and shorten the length a bit. You can now get shorter boards (with all the flying and pumping benefits) without giving up too much volume. I think +5 to +10 is ideal. Any lower and you do struggle more and lose low end. At 70 kg, I can get a very comfortable +10 board that is under 5 feet in length.

I got my new compact higher volume Sup/wingding and 100%. Will never go back to the 75l board. I rode this board around 6 times in two months and the wind dropped in every session. Sure I can see if you live somewhere with tradewinds it's doable but in Sydney, the horse latitudes, no way for me...
