What are your thoughts on wing span? I've tended to have a 5.5m as my biggest wing since that's the largest size in the f-one strike range. However, I'm noticing that the vayu wings have a bit more wingspan than I'm used to. I'm worried the 3.7m span of the 5.5m aura is too wide and I'll be better off getting a 5m. I have an old cwc 7m which has about a 3.7m wing span as well. I find this wing annoying to ride and the wing tips sometimes catch, but it's a bit hard to tell if the main cause of annoyance is the span or simply that the wing is so big and bulky.
I'm tall (6'2"), but I find the wingspan to be very manageable and I'm not catching wingtips when pumping or anything. I think part of it is that the tips on the x2 are quite stiff, so even if they graze the surface they deflect and don't get caught up. I had a much harder time with the Ozone Flux 5.7 where I would catch wingtips, they would flex and then I'd get tripped up on them. The x2 has a lot of pull and grunt, but it feels like a much smaller wing when flying.
A few other observations (highlights and minor criticisms) now that I have a handful more sessions on the x2:
- Realize it isn't really marketed as a surf wing, but this wing luffs and surfs incredibly well. Totally stable and predictable.
-The wing is very physical and I feel like it gets overpowered at 15-16 knots. Not totally surprising with the stiffness, but my windrange for the 5.5 is probably 10-16 knots. A harness line is very helpful with this wing.
- This is the first "large" wing that I've felt was really fun. Usually I find myself just cruising with wings over 5m, but I can really throw this wing around, try new things, jump, backwind, etc... Its a really fun wing.
- Not really a comment on this wing, but I love riding with the boom and don't see myself going back to handles. Im finding a lot of situations where I naturally grab for the wing with my back hand. With a boom you can just grab the wing in the middle and it balances. You obviously can't grab a back handle and ride one handed. For example, jibing off of a wave my front hand is on the luff handle, I jibe off and just grab the middle of the boom with my free hand and ride out of it. The same thing would take an extra handoff with handles.
- Very happy with the purchase thus far. Only remaining factor will be longevity. The wing is really stiff and pulls hard and I have some concern that it puts a lot of stress on the canopy. Only time will tell here.
- I kind of wish the wing didn't have the weird strut kinks. These are only really relevant when using handles (they create room for your hands). With a boom they are unnecessary and they would probably be unnnecessary with a different handle design. I think they probably add some unnecessary weight, weakness and manufacturing challenge (cost). Minor complaint, but I think these could be simplified.
- As I expected, the bolt covers (cover the unused handle holes when using a boom) fell out and got lost within 2 sessions. They just press in and they are neither secure or precise. They should bolt in, and I'm afraid I will rack my knuckles on the exposed bolt stubs. Room for improvement here.
Not enough time on the Aura 3 to give my thoughts yet, but I'm very excited to get on it.
