I think it just depends on the airline. I think golf clubs get some sort of exception for weight or cost on many airlines, so that's why you see products labeled as such.
Alaska Airlines let's you go over 50lbs for sports equipment. They also don't charge you if you want to check a box of wine. And they fly to fun places like Maui, Baja, and Portland (the Gorge).
Am typing this flying to Maui right now. Alaska didn't even bother to weigh my bag. Our other large checked bag was over by 3lbs and the lady just said, "I bet it's mostly baby stuff." We are traveling w a newborn, and she just passed it through without charging us. If you fly 20k miles with them you get to MVP status which gives you two free checked bags per person.

this time the main bag is packed with 4.8 wing board, 4.7 prone board, long mast, five front wings and my 3.0. Smaller wheelie has all the stabs, short mast, pump, my 3.5, fuselages, waterwear, etc.. Wanted the keep the big bag relatively manageable for the baggage handlers and for fitting in the Uber and rental car.

I have a Mystic Daypack 5.6 for car transport and a Mystic Star Boardbag 5.6 for flying. I am very satisfied with both, reasonable price and well made.

In my Mystic Star Boardbag I can easily pack one board (F-One Rocket Wing 5.4 75l), 3 Ensis Wings and all the other stuff: Mast, Fuselage, Wings, Wetsuits,.

For additional protection I made an inner bag using ordinary air bubble foil: 2 or 3 layers on each side, welded with an electric iron. Attention: Put a baking paper between iron and air bubble foil, otherwise you will get problems with your wife! Aprox. 500g.

I just got the 5'4" ION Tec Gearbag and somehow it is waaay bigger than I expected. I guess I hadn't carefully looked at the width and height dimensions. I tossed in my 5'0" Fanatic, three wings, two foils, and my wetsuit and it still looks basically empty. The ends of the bag aren't tapered at all which makes it extra bulky. Also, there are no handles on either side (only the top and the shoulder strap) which seems like a glaring omission. Wouldn't recommend.
