I have not noticed any reduction in pupmability through shortening the fuselage. The main parameter there is the size of the front wing... when I ride with the ART699 (550mm2), you do need an unsustainable pace. With the 899, I can loop waves. I look at the specs of the GF FTS 14.5 and if you like carving going on an even shorter fuse and a mast more forward would make it even more playful without loosing anything on pumping

As a newbie (old dog with 38 sessions this year) without the skills to appreciate so much of what you are experimenting with, this still interests me with regard to my stone age Slingshot i76 (1600 sq sm) foil. This has been a good entry level foil for me, but the wing has a long neck and is set quite forward of the mast. You've given me reason to move the mast into the A position directly on top of the wing. It will be interesting to see how I do with more maneuverability but less stability, as I'm still learning to jibe.

I've also tried out the Triton as the developer sometimes comes to cancun mexico to try his protos. It's a very cool setup but my misgiving has always been the lack of pumpability that we all love so much when playing in the waves.
I'm sure somebody had already sent this link to Adrian Roper and wouldn't be at all suprised to see some new "radical short" fuses coming from Axis in the near future.. Inspired by your work. I can't WAIT to get my hands on something like what you've built and be able to ride my 899 and 999 with Mast bolted straight through to the fuse someday soon. Thanx for sharing man. (now.. If ONLY you could dream up a mechanism to help shed sargazo/seagrass/shredded pieces of plastic bags... from my foil while riding... Youd be my hero for life!)

Regarding seaweeds, I am currently in Barbados and there are loads of seaweeds (what a bummer...). I think a high aspect, high sweep angle wing with a kinked mast could do it. I can see how such a swept wing would provide enough stability to be ridden without stab without suffering from the lack of glide and pumpability of the Triton. The amount of R&D needed to make it happen is way more than simply moving the mast forward, so I would not count on it anytime soon :)

Can't stop thinking about this thread and what it would be like to have such a short fuse that my mast basically bolts straight to the front wing. Yesterday had an epic powered day in rolling ocean swell with the 899, normal ultra short fuse and 375 prog stab... And I was wondering.. Do you LOSE pointing ability as the fuse is shortened? I understand it gets twitchy in pitch and yaw... But does it cause you to lose ability to scream upwind on a powered day? Does any of the effects of turbulence due to the thick alu mast get AMPLIFIED as you go shorter on the fuse length?

1- You do not lose any pointing ability. Zero.

2- No turbulence effect. This setup has less drag thanmysillyshort setup with a 250 prog stab. I still use the sillyshot fuse when prone foiling...I have not been to catch a single wave with my radicallyshortV3... it is still too hard for me to jump in the right position at takeoff. On the other hand, if I use the sillyshort while winging, it feels like I am driving a minivan.

I never thought this sort of mast plate would be possible but I've never worked with this material. If you really want to get a bit more scientific and prove things on the same basis as Axis you can bolt the mast to the wall and hang a weight off the end of the mast and compare the deflection. Would be very interesting.

I know that would be interesting to see but I did not do it simply because I do not have an easy setup where I could do it. On the other hand, I can tell you right away that it is not as stiff as the AXIS baseplate. That being said, I do not think that the baseplate contributes to a significant part of the overall foil stiffness. I think that major contributors are
1 - front wing (this one is like chewing gum compared to any other part)
2 - mast
3 - baseplate
4 - fuse
5 - track and board
whereas 3-5 are small contributors in comparison to 1-2...

I disagree with this assessment pretty soundly. The stiffness of any system is most critical near where the force is applied, so this is in my opinion the absolute worst place to put a less stiff component. Also down at the junction to the wing itself would be another bad place to make the system less stiff.

Keep in mind that at any instant, the force applied by your body on the board is transmitted through the board, the baseplate, the mast, all the way to the wing, i.e., the force you apply must be counteracted by an equal resultant force on the wing pushing against the water.
