First ride on the high modulus mast today in super stormy conditions. Wind chop was multi directional and wind super strong and gusty so good time to try with the 1099 to see if I could notice any difference to the aluminium. When riding downwind on a bump although I did notice the difference, what was really immediately noticeable was how well this mast enabled me to handle the chop and going fast or upwind. Previously I felt I was being pushed all over the place on the 1099 in these conditions, so the 899 or 799 was the go to wing for me. I always liked the 1099 for river bumps but not so much when blowing 30 knots. I really feel this mast has widened the wind range of the 1099 considerably. I could ride it fast(ish) with confidence and still get the long bump runs with minimal pumping. Can't wait for waves hopefully tomorrow. Expecting a lot from this mast after today.

Glad to see this. I have a high mod mast but my biggest wing is an HPS980. I'm wanting to order and ART, but I'm debating between 999 or 1099 and can't seem to make up my mind. I'm 82kg and normally sail in lighter winds, but the HPS980 does cover that pretty well.

I went from 980 to 999. I felt it was too close together. The 999 was faster and glided better but didn't turn great. I only lost a knot or two on the low end. 899 was more of a step.

Resurecting this post, has anyone used the Maguire mast mentioned above please ?Im UK based and it looks like a relatively cost effecthive option but this forum is the only place I can find any mention of it and theres not a great deal of info on their own website.Given that the company makes foil dingies you would hope they know what they are doing but its still a lot of money if they are a bit of an unknown in the winging world.I've only been on Axis kit for 6 weeks and have just bent a 19mm aluminium mast in normal use with an HPS 1050 when using a 7m wing, pumping hard in very marginal conditions so, whilst Im expecting a warranty replacement, have completely lost faith in that mast so now looking at alternatives ! :-(

I looked at the Maguire foils too. Mast looks bomb, and his foils look very impressive.

Given he designed moths and very successful ones. I'd consider his design very highly above many oem designs. He had some cheaper demo ones, for a good while. I'm sure you could demo too.

I haven't tried it but WakeThief did a comparison and he prefers the 19mm aluminum for pumping. That makes it a very hard sell for me given it costs 15x.

So, just for info, I pretty much decided I was going to buy a Maguire mast as a friend said good things about their boats but wanted a few answers to basic questions around warranty, strength, feedback from users etc.However after chasing them twice I got some very brief, (largely uninformative) answers and was advised the price was going up due to a change in manufacturing to a gloss finish which added signficant extra labour. This meant the cost would be getting a lot closer to the retail price on an Axis HM, oh, and there would be a 6 week leadtime. Shame as would have been nice to support a UK manufacturer thats new to the winging market.As I have a trip in a week's time and wanted the new mast for that I decided to go with the Axis so here's hoping its up to the job and their hype.

I think Wakethief still prefers the carbon mast for some conditions. Doc start pumping at low speed with huge wings is a very different discipline to pumping between waves with a wing at speed. From my experience the hm mast is so much nicer in the waves and basically all disciplines other than doc start. I love pumping this mast with the 1099 for example, where definitely prefer it to the aluminium, but I'm doing at speeds higher than doc start.

I use the 820 for everything but the 750 would be nice for downwinding especially on smaller days but $$$

Maybe the 19mm alloy mast works ok in shorter lengths even with the big foils ? Guess once you have tasted the high mod carbon it's pretty hard to go back!

Any news on updates to the carbon masts in the 2023 range?

Anyone want a 96cm Mikes Lab mast custom conversion for black fuse? One of a kind. 13mm thick. Mint condition. $1000. In USA ????

I started with the Axis 19mm 60cm and 82cm masts and they were great.
Used the standard carbon 86cm (non high mod) and it was a small step up in performance. There's nothing wrong with the aluminium masts but the carbon feels a little more locked in.
Bought a Hi Mod Axis 1020 and it gave the same sensation to the 86cm carbon mast. But, I think if you compare apples with apples, you'd find that the normal carbon in a 1020 would flex more than the Hi Mod of the same length. I used the png 1300 with both and it was a very responsive ride. When pushing on the foil tips, there was about the same amount of flex when comparing the standard 86cm with the hi mod 1020.
The lack of requirement to crack the aluminium bolts connecting the base plate to the mast in a carbon is a nice benefit. One less thing to do on set up and pack up and a weak point avoided. The thickness of the Hi Mod is big near the base plate (thicker than the aluminium I think), but it tapers a lot and I think at the tip of the mast, the mast is thinner than the aluminium. It feels a lot heavier than the aluminium.
If I was super tight on budget, I would stick with the aluminium masts. They're good.
The other thing to be aware of is that the lack of flex MIGHT be seen by some as of concern?? My foil box blew out sideways after some use of the Axis Hi mod 1020 with the PnG 1300 (6 months). I'm of the impression the massive leverage forces that this combo generates stacked with the lack of flex you get with the carbon mast means that those forces get instantly transferred to the foil box and it will suffer if it's not strong enough.

I just picked up a minty used 82cm High Modulus for $1000. I love it. I am using mainly with 1150 in light wind and 1099 in higher wind. I am a beginner/intermediate winger (109kg) (make my jibes and foot switches, still working on tacks). I could not commit to one new, but I jumped on this used one for 1/3 off. It is just a sweet piece of kit. Placebo or not, I don't care. It looks and feels great!
