So if mast shimming to bring the nose down would you also need to bring the mast position slightly forward?
First rides on the Silk 850 last few days wingfoil. I think my third eye is opening,??to what modern foils are capable of. Few strange feelings I never experienced before. I placed the mast where I thought it would be good position. Felt good maybe a touch too much front foot. Than moved it 1cm back, immediately terrible, felt so draggy and slow. Usually when I would do that on other foils i just felt weight shift to back foot.
For now my feeling on silk how I have it placed is, it feels quite front foot pressure when going straight in the turns that feeling disappears and sometimes I catch a rail in bottom turn and top turn not often but sometimes. Based on tuning Kane suggests I should move mast a hair forward and shimm the stab? Im just afraid of having to much fron foot pressure on the straights but wouldn't mind if it pushed a bit more in bottom turns. This feel could be because my board has about 1 degree on the tracks as other foils felt better with more board bottom angle. I remember reading somewhere Silk was meant for flat bottom 0 degree at the boxes.
As I gather from everything I've read about Silk supposedly it's the worst from all AFS performance foils in glide and pump and amazing in turning. If Silk is the worst than I cant imagine how glidey and how well Pure and Enduro must pump. For me Silk is already such an upgrade in that department so stoked on the change.
I have tried 3 tail 142,132 and h38 ha38 felt like turbo and so much more glide didn't sacrifice too much in turning for my feel but haven't ridden it that long yet. But in turbulent water feels just a touch more nervous. For now 132 is perfect blend of control speed and glide. 142 is not too bad just everything a bit tuned down. I guess would be good in prone.
If I were you I'd start by trying a base plate shim to replicate 0 degrees in the box. I find the Silk rides pretty neutral (a little more front foot) with a 0 degree board, and I've heard others who have some issues riding it on boards with rake. Start there before shimming the tail. I used to shim tails on other setups and haven't had the need at all (haven't even experimented with it) on the Silks. I would think that if your board has rake in the boxes, you would want to move the mast a little back if you shim the rake out?
I haven't been remotely tempted by another foil system since I started riding the silks a year and a half ago. There may be some holes in the AFS lineup, but as far as a surfy foil goes - they nailed it. And yes - the 132 tail pairs perfectly with the 850 (and the 1050).
