My 1050 silk turned up the other day and so far I've had a wing session and a couple of short sup downwind runs on it.
Basically it felt like a toned down 850, with everything happening just that little bit slower. It still has the silky smooth handling and impeccable manners of the 850.
On the wing I ran it with a 0.5' shim to just open up the speed range without excessive front foot pressure. I felt like it could have done with a little bit more shimming when going faster. In a first for me though I managed to ride a boat wake into wind with the wing flagged out trying to drag me off the back of the wake. So the efficiency is definitely there.
Yesterday I did a couple of short sup downwind runs to dial in mast position and gauge how it paddled up. On the first run I used a .75' tail shim. It paddled up and cruised along really nicely but felt like the mast needed to come back a touch and that it was over shimmed.
So second run pulled the shim out and moved the mast back about a centimetre. The paddle up was more controlled and the ride felt better balanced. Speed to link bumps just appears and its turning potential is incredible. I'm really looking forward to clocking some longer runs in on this foil.
So at this stage I'm thinking for winging I'll run a 0.5-1' shim to open the speed window as wide as possible. For sup downwind and probably surfing it looks like no shim is the go.
Last night I sent an email to AFS asking if they'd consider a higher aspect Silk foil. Apparently they're working on it

Exciting times.
