Re-Broadcast of Day 1 and Day 2 are no online. Interesting to see how high the level of sailing is. Also interesting to see that no matter how good you are when there is little wind you can still get bogged and wiped out on the way out.

The PWA draw's set up perfectly - a Bernd - Koster heat looks very likely.

I'd say for time, 2 man heats would take double the time to run and for the past week the wind has been a bit light by Maui standards, most days have come from nowhere with a pretty average wind forecast. Now they have a result at least who knows they might switch to man on man for the second round.

good to see the best guys in the world in some decent conditions! funny that the top sailors are totally different.

this is awesome to see.

i as lucky enough to meet Levi (2nd) and keith (4th) in the quattro/goya shop 5 days before the event. both lovely guys. keith was adjusting the clue on levi's sail. they both chatted to our group for 20 minutes. very inspiring.

Come on lol, if there is one spot in the world where you can run a man on man format it is Hookipa isn't it? i think there is more to it, i would have prefer the pwa system just to insure consistancy thru the season, why just in hawaii they change it? Man on man is more intense in terms of pressure as you can follow your direct opponent and steal waves from him it is a different strategy, 4 men heat looks like an expression session with scoring system, every surf event is based on man on man at a high competion level (pwa, wct) 4 men heat is used for ???lower??? level comps (awt, wqs) or when you need to go thru a ladder with lots of competitors but that was not the case here. I think they have done under the pressure of the locals and the awt riders as it is there prefered format, and changed the seeding as well, trials winners would have gone threw harder first heat so kinda advantage the locals and awt again.

Nah they did the 2 best advancing in Cabo Verde as well. I think it is a good thing - the guys who are sailing the best go through. Otherwise you get good guys taking each other out and the others scraping through lucky heats...

Mate, there was more upsets with this format than with the man on man, look who got true, faurot, matahoshi... highly doubt they would have gone threw man on man against Koster and Mussolini, they could have, they are good, but with a lower chance, it looks like it advantages the low seeds, nothing wrong with this, i am just wondering why the head judge have not explain it, it is just a bit less performance driven, it kinda down grade the competition, the show was there for sure but...

Yeah they were upsets but watching the heats I would say the decisions were right - Koster sailed badly so didn't go through whilst Matahoshi got a few ok ones. Didn't see Ricardo and Faurot but apparently Ricardo spent the heat catching smaller waves that just didn't have scoring potential.

Gotta say though that Thomas Traversa definitely should have gone through, tweaked airs and air takas should score wayy more than what they did in that heat.

There were definately a lot of upsets that shouldn't have happened, but a lot were because the PWA guys sailed bad heats, whilst the local guys knew the spot very well, and could capitalise. And yeah, Ricardo basically picked bad waves, same thing happenned with Swift.

TBH, I think the problem was that the AWT guys were seeded TOO low. It meant they got put against the best PWA guys and they knocked each other out (e.g. seadi, roediger, fernandez, hauser), whilst the lower level pwa guys were put against each other (e.g. denel, ezzy, jamaer, guillemin) and got easy rides through the first round.

What's really screwed up is that Koster and Campello have to face each other in the first round of the double, and the winner of that has to take on Mussolini, while there's other 1st round double heats like Skye vs Jung and Martin vs Beaux.

So is Mussolini leading the world championship now? Was there some rumour that Chile event might not go ahead? So this could be the decider?

Will be interesting to see what happens in the double if they include a jump. Forecast looks like it should be windier so they probably will have to judge a jump.

I hope Ricardo gets through, he can sail that place just as well as Levi and Kauli when he is on it

Would it be who ever has the two best results for both elims wins ? So if Seadi came second agan in the double, he would be the overall winner ?

There is another draw written up with the earlier rounds (competitors who bombed out first in the single elim) competing against each other again. The ladder is then drawn up so that after the first round, the winners have to fight their way up a ladder again. So for example, someone who bombed out in the single would have to go ahead and win their early double heats THEN beat every top seeded rider and also win against siver twice.

So the worst siver can do is second, the worst seidi can do is third etc...

No so a double elim is basically another chance for everyone else who got knocked out.

So at the top of the results is Levi, then Seadi. They don't need to sail the double now, and neither of them could finish lower than 3rd overall.

Now everyone else sails the double, until they come up with a winner of the double, who then gets a chance to sail against Seadi, if that person beat Seadi then they get a chance to challenge Levi for the final. Levi then would need to be beaten twice..

basically someone would need to win a whole lot of heats to beat Levi or Seadi now..

While the commentators were talking the conditions up from the live heats that I watched there didn't look to be much rhythm to the swell. Some heats scored quite good sets and some heats got almost nothing. It also seemed to be a little random with how the set waves broke with some giving long rides and some closing down quickly. In many of the heats results would have changed a lot if three waves had counted instead of two so it was quite heavily weighted towards getting good set waves. It was good to see Kauli and Levi rewarded for some good riding in "difficult" conditions.

which is very typical of that swell at Hookipa, and can be super frustrating to sail - but just shows how good those top 4 guys are at picking those waves there

Even when it's super busy there, and someone scores the awesome wave that breaks right through both sections - most of the time it's Levi on it! he just knows the place so well

If he's ontop of the ladder then yes.
