Hi Tim,

Great to see your post and good to talk today. Having all sailboards starting together this year will be excellent!!

Also great that the Start boards are available and on site (that makes it easier)!!

Without going back through the posts, who is after one? FoS, you're no doubt down for one (as you've entered), anyone else?

Really looking forward to this weekend, should be a lot of fun.

Eight entries so far ... Keep 'em coming!!

Dave, can't sail Saturday got a wedding, not my own though, once is enough.
Is it OK to rock up Sunday and enter on the day if Im there about 9.30?
Still not sure about sail number, do we pick any number or is it allocated?
Any idea what time first race starts?
Where do we rig up?

Yep I want one. I'll put my own rig on it. I should be there around 8:30 as well.

I hope the number being 100m/h tape will be ok.
I don't know my number yet. Oh well

My advice is go to PJ's Peter Johnston's and buy pre cut numbers and letters there. They are cheap, I think it cost $16 for two set's for me yesterday.

Peter Johnson are about $3 a letter and would have to most probably make them to order as the height must be minimum 230mm, width 150mm with 30mm line thickness. (you may be lucky and they have them in stock, sounds like Russ was)

In your case FOS 3 letters and 4 numbers = 7x3= $21
and you need to have both sides marked. 2x21=$42 for one sail to be marked.

The good thing about spending the money is that the numbers should last for the life of the sail and they will be there for any event you go in.

The bad thing about spending the money, is spending the money if you only go in one or two comps.

p.s. don't forget you need a hyphen between your letters and numbers. PJ will throw that in for free.

you could always buy some black sticky back and cut them out yourself.
it is the best option if you have multiple sails that need numbers

Dave, if the winds are light I'll grab one.

Hi Anthony, no, you would need to enter before 9AM on Saturday, as that is the cut-off and there wouldn't be any one available to take entries after that.

Actual racing begins at 10AM each day, which means being out on the water at the start line at 10AM. If the wind is lighter, it can take 15 minutes to get to the start line, so worth being on the water by 9:30AM for a 10AM start. We can do our own briefing for windsurfers at around 9:20AM and go through what the sailing instructions say (which we won't get until we sign in on the day). All easy, all fun, but organised fun!!! And not organised by us, which is even better!!!!

Each fleet (lasers, NS14's, windsurfers, etc, etc) will START either 3 or 5 minutes apart and we could be first up or last, or anywhere in the middle (this will be identified in the sailing instructions). After everyone has finished the START sequence will begin all over again for RACE 2!! Then there may be lunch and then back out for RACE 3 and 4.

Regarding sail numbers, if you can't get proper numbers from PJ's or Ian Ross in Sandy Bay, then sticky tape will do. And if you can't get the AUS bit, just get the digits. Nice to do it properly, but if not you will need something that is at least recognizable!!

Another thing, if in doubt, get their early so you are not rushed .... If you get there at 8AM, this will give you time to rig, time to sign ON, get your sailing instructions, chat, get your wetsuit on and then have breifing and then get out on the water by 9:30AM. If you get there at 9AM it will be a panic rush!!

There is another option for sail numbers if you have a steady hand, A big fat permanant marker will do the trick. Don't think I can make it this weekend, have an appointment with the chiropractor saturday morning, crook sholder.

i have the number insignia cloth here.
have made up numbers before for some dinghy sails.
i dont have the templates though, so if you are prepared to cut them yourself or make up a template then i can supply the sticky cloth.

OK things I've learnt

Sail Numbers

PJ's have a wide range of numbers etc, in the correct size, they are $1 per character, Also I'm not having a hyphen cause I reckon I can go 2 lines instead.

So 7 char per side meant $14 per sail, and i got enough for 2 sails. I think I'll try and put them on on Sat morning. I do intend to be there about 8 am, so it should all be good.

Also after reading from the Olympics in 2008 there was a protest about sail numbers after a crew borrowed a boat for the last race (theirs was trashed). It was ruled that it gave them no advantage and the appeal was dismissed, so from this I'm reading best effort is important, but hell I doubt I'm gonna threaten anyone for first across the line, so who'll protest.

Sorry to hear your out bear, but I think the marker pen idea is a Houston special only, I'm not even sure if I'm gonna get the sticker on straight.

I think that covers it, no to wreck my gear at Goats tonight so I can't sail in this anyways

Anthony, be great to see you out there on the start line!!! Use the sail number you've been allocated: AUS-926 It can be found on the sail number register website that has been posted a few times!!

Remember, you will need to enter before 9AM Saturday (best to do it online today)!!

Windsurfing Tasmania (WT) is our Yacht Club, for insurance purposes.

Forecast is looking like moderate NNE'erlies all day, each day which should be good. Relatively flat and hopefully a consistent wind!!

Hey FoS, if you can, best to put your numbers on the sail at home on flat ground, not down the beach!! Line them up above a batten to keep them straight!! Do this while the sail is un-rigged. It'll take 15 minutes or so and you don't want to be doing it down the beach if you are in a rush to get out on the water!!!
