But of course the Swastika is also a very good design, and far older than WW2..

For a sail to be 'easy' in my book, it has to be light, stable, responsive, and see through.

hahaha yeah always wondered about how they deal with that

almost every sail brand advertising 'light weight' on their website, so it means nothing! the super freak is made of dacron, which may be light when dry but wet believe me it is heavy and has trampoline like properties (the material moves differently)

that said I have never sailed one and would be really interested. also really want to check out their new freestylePRO which is on some blogs.. looks sick!!

The weight was also my main question. After using the demo a couple of times I can tell you it is a complete non-issue.

I found the freak's PVC window to be far easier to see through than a new NP Fly thingy that I also sailed.

@Jeroensurf: Your local spot is hardcore. No doubt.
This is as hardcore as I can make Shearwater look (it has some good chop though)

Yep, the SF did take a lot of outhaul. Again, reminds me of the Ezzy Wave. The Alpha in contrast can be set with no outhaul at all. Downhaul was similar.

The dacron just feels softer withthe stretch I guess.

There is always a line where freedom of speech and don,t get people unnesecery hurt inflicts. This seem to be one of them.

Back to the sail:
Its a absolute on of a kind kinda sail and for sure not for everyone.
I haven,t seen anyone who tried without a strong opinion about it.
Lots of people hate it, but you have also a big group of what i call Freakamentalists who will probably never sail anything else anymore.
There is only one thing really true about this sails: Unless you tried it you really can,t judge it as its so different as anything else there is nothing to compare it with.

Reading from the HotSails forum there is another sail available that is not officially advertised.
It's called the speedfreak, it's a dacron version of the speed demon which is non-cam free-race type sail, combining the stretchy gust absorbing dacron superfreak with a more flat water oriented speed demon, more batons, less spinakery. Looks really cool available with or without a window in the middle.

I bought one yesterday on closeout, 2010 model, 4.0 ..... price was 310AUD.

I had an ich about it for quite some time, now the decision was made...I need a durable and soft sail for tough onshore conditions, so I hope it will serve me well.

i believe the swastika picture that barn has posted is from Buddhism. a very peaceful faith, ironic isn't it.

on the topic;

sailed a super freak 5.8 once in very light condition sub planning and planning occasionally and found it to be a very light feeling sail and super easy to flick round in jybes. would like to give it a go in strong gusty winds with some surf.
it is different, good different.

plus i have seen some that are 3+ years old and still look great.

I have had the exact experience 8 months ago, 5.8 in super light wind conditions, felt like a soft feather....
Based on this, I decided to give it a go with 4.0 and will see when the temperatures rise above -5 degrees celsius....

not sure if it's vinyl, but the clear window in the SF was awesome. i can see when i'm about to get run over by a goldcoast 40ft bogan cruiser boat operator i wish the other brands would do it too

after trying a couple now myself, i think if you like the soft feel of the SF, you could also give a new severne a go too as the couple of S1 sails tried feel somewhat similar, at the cost of what felt like some bottom end in marginal conditions, as opposed to the more monofilm sails of the same size, but more forgiving and i would guess the materials would be longer lasting?

can anyone tell me how long the boom is on a 5.7/5.8 SF and S1?

I would be interested to hear anyone thoughts on the difference in feel between the standard SuperFreak and Ultra light version. I sail a mix of both versions. My 7m superFreak Ultra light just seems to absorb the gusts not having a 7m standard SuperFreak my 9m is a standard SuperFreak but due to the size difference it is sailed in different wind conditions it is hard to compare them. I have noticed that since changing to a RDM mast the bottom end and power you get from pumping it seems to have increased. It is interesting to see the use of kite material as in the Ultra light and how it has changed the feel of the sail.

I sailed a few ULs and for me its too much, like a sail of chewinggum.
