I've had 5.0, 5.5, 6.2, 7.0, 7.8 Mach races, 7.0, 7.8, 8.6 OD's and 7.0, & 8.6 GT's at some point over the years (pie weight 88-90kg)
for me it's about understanding the size and wind strength context. The small M's 5.0, 5.5, 6.2 all fit on RDM's, gone are the big heavy cams. Combined with a light RDM mast and boom, they are very light and easy to handle. The luff pocket is not that big with these sizes. I haven't tried the newer smaller OD's. The over the older R series, i found little difference in handling between the OD's and the Race, hence you might as well have the greater stability of the Race.
For the larger sizes it's a different story. I tried a 8.6 GT and hated it, also a 7.8 M3 and didn't like it that much either. Why? The 8.6GT is a big sail, the bottom end was good and the manoeuvrability was great also, but there was too much compromise at the top end, the overall wind range was quite narrow. The 7.8M3 hand impressive range, but was a bit hard to manoeuvre (and massive luff pocket). I finally ditched them both and got OD's in 7.8 and 8.6, which for me gives me the best of all worlds, stability and manoeuvrability
The 7.0 for me is an interesting size, I can go with any of them M, OD, GT. Currently ive got a M3 and a GT. The 7.0 M3 has the larger cams and is best rigged on a SDM, however at 7.0 it's not too heavy and still quite manoeuvrable. The 7.0 GT is still small enough to rig on a 430 RDM and light weight boom and at 7.0 is still small enough to be reasonably stable at the top end. I like the GT as I use it on my FSW board as well and I don't need to pack SDM stuff (base & boom) when going to the beach. With no big fluff pocket, it's also more robust when you get caught in the shore break.
In summary for me it's getting the context right in the size category, understanding the compromises between, manoeuvrability and stability
For me the replacement for the OD and GT will be about getting this right, a bit like the Gator sail series where the small sizes are like pure wave sails and the larger sizes are like pure free ride sails. I'm sure Severne will be putting some heavy thought and testing into it as it will be a big move merging these two lines

you are spot on. Turbo GT has a good bottom end, but the top end is terrible. I have a Turbo 9.2 and an Overdrive 8.6. And while I get going with the Turbo at 1kn lower wind (10kn) than the OD, anything above 16kn starts to be very difficult to handle. Whereas I can use the Overdrive 8.6 at 20kn with gusts up to 25kn and still handle the power. The wind range is just enormous.
I also have most of the Gators (had 8.0, still have 6.5, 5.5, 4.7, 4.2, 3.7) and true, they change characteristics completely along this range. The thinking behind is obviously that with stronger wind, the water changes from pure freeride more towards wave/b&j conditions, so the sailing style changes and the sail characteristics follows that across the different sizes.
But for a Slalom sail actually I want to have the same characteristics. I don't change my slalom style between 8.6 low wind and 6.2 high wind sails. The only style is just to be fully locked in, full body tension and just fly across the chop.
I really hope the Severne guys change their mind and don't abandon their probably best sail series for weekend speed warriors. I don't want to change brand since I have all the apex pro masts. If Severne really abandons the ODs, I'd probably buy some of the last ODs to have a stock. Especially my 7.0/7.8 OD Mach2 I use heavily, and while they are for sure good for 2-3 more seasons, I know I'll need new ones then.
