Heading straight for Yeppoon (Capricornia) on latest BOM predictions. Looks like I'll be rigging the Ezzy 1.0metre kids rig and 20litre boogie board.

what's the strongest you've experienced?

oh, you meant cyclones. Growing up in Yeppoon in the late seventies and eighties we had a couple pass land north of us (about 100km) at St. Lawrence. Most memorable was the house constantly shaking and the windows bowing and walking on the carpet in a very old timber high set house was like a jumping castle as the wind pressure created a cushion of air underneath. We had to sleep in the centre of the house at one stage as the float glass windows would have sent shards everywhere if they blew in.

One of the eeriest things though is it will be pounding from the south-east one minute then half an hour later it swings 180degrees and repeats the process all over in the opposite direction. Usually what it hasn't overturned on it's first run through it gets on the back end.

My memory isn't so bad. Just did a search of cyclones within 100km of Yeppoon during the time I lived there in my childhood (1977 - 1987) Interesting to see we didn't have any more cyclones from 87 to 2007 within 100km. Maybe 2009 and 2010 is a return to those weather patterns - I remember the unrelenting SE winds we used to get in Feb and March. Looking forward to that.

the interesting thing sausage is if you expand your search to include hybrid lows the number will tripple....

in SEQ other than the cyclones that have hit in the past we have had a very large number of hybrid lows of cyclone intensity.

plus my favourite storm the east coast low.

They've moved the track south....that wasn't supposed to happen!!

So the shade sails are down (4 cover an area of 17m x 10m and a redundant broadband dish has been removed from the roof). To board or not to board...up the louvers, that is the question.

i'd board the louvres,

they most likely weren't designed to take a cat 2 cyclone. even if they don't break they will let in water.

this page will help you keep track of things.

Well the hosue is boarded up and one outdoor table in th pool. The wind is starting to build but I think we are pretty well prepared - we have the hand up to stop the cycone in the picture

The cars are in the neighbours garage as I don't trust my dodgey looking shed (very convienitent that they are travelling around Australia right now and my windsurfing gear is tucked in nicely behind the couch in the lounge room.

Lost power and internet until this afternoon. Still waiting for (Virgin) mobile coverage to come back. No damage at all here. My yard was a big puddle this morning but that has mostly soaked in now. Lots of branches down the street. Hope everyone else came out unscathed!

How was the wind in Bowen wormy? You were a bit closer to the action.

The wind's been disappointing. We were expecting over 20 and got maybe 15 yesterday. Today there was about 10.

Cyclone - bah humbug.

I was in Townsville for the weekend but my weather station recorded max gust of 42 knts from NW at around 2am Sunday. Not a lot of rain but bowen was on the north end of the eye. Overall it was a pretty good outcome for Bowen, mainly tree damage, You guys on the south side of the eye had more rain and wind by the looks of things.
