Yer I haven't sailed down the Broadwater for 20 years.
Phils always telling me how gusty and busy it gets down there.
I have some good days at VP but its more up and down then Wello or Manly unless its dead south.
It does have a nice Beach to Launch from though at high tide

I think Phil is right. I went to Train on Sun, after about 6 months and didn't like it at all, what a waste of time. That's why Mon at Vic/p felt like in paradise. It looks like I'll have to try Wello again. I was there only once in winter when it was pretty gusty from west, most guys were on 6.2-7m cam sails. Pretty choppy but still manageable.
Do you reckon Wello is still better than Vic/p in SE? I saw from your Mon GPS data you went trough the channel out about 3k. In which way is it better? Less gusty, longer swells, longer runs .....?

Wind direction on Sunday was exceptionally good for the Train, because usually a bit more South less East and half of the run is wind less completely.
Could be 30 knots in the middle and not enough to stand on sinking board at the starting beach bank.
That is way I will be looking also for alternative, longer flat water runs.
Pity VP Or WP means 1 hour drive one way in comparison to 10-15 min to Broadwater sites.
Are there many people on Moreton Bay travelling from that far to sail ? 1 hour or more ?

But we have to agree that Tony and Phil mastered the knowledge about Broadwater that could achieve unbelievable good results. Same day , same wind and this two have often better results that those guys on WP, VP

Maybe then that is just matter of patience and TOW for us , George.

yer winds much more consistent at Wello than VP
some people don't like wello cause it more open but i love my long runs out the back and shooting down the swells.

Well I'll be there soon as that's exactly what I'm looking for. Long runs, swells plus open water. I was always a little bit worried how to get back if conditions change but I'm slowly building my confidence and skills, plus these S/Reflex sails have pretty amazing wind range. I've noticed you sail midweek as well so I might join you soon, at least for a minute or so before you disappear in the distance, ha ha.

Hey Peter, it's not even an hour from GC, definitely worth it. I think Vic/p was about 40 min from Movie World. We talked about it with Curt and I'll enclose my trailer so we can through all the gear in it and use one car. Share the fuel cost and have some company on the way.

I travel about 40-45 mins to either Wello or Viccy Point pending traffic. It's not much further for me to end up in Shearwater which I have a few times for some clear water and sand. So I understand your position with travelling but we are a friendly bunch up here and welcome you guys whenever you want to come up for some drag racing (don't do it with Vando though as he makes us all look silly)

interesting to hear what you guys think of VP. I love the place. lots of fun sailing there.

I don't think VP is quite as bad as vando has found it but do agree that in a SE wind wello has a touch more wind out the back as well as bigger bumps and cleaner water. for me it's the mud and boat ramp access that killed it. call me soft but I like the sand at VP.

VP in a SSE-S is awesome! in a SE wind I still find VP far better than shearwater or the train. no traffic and so much more consistant wind. even an ese is a ball at VP, the runs are straight off the beach out toward Redland bay golf course and the water goes flat.

it should be about 40 minutes from shearwater to VP. I've done the drive many times. take Beenleigh Redland bay road onto mount cotton road and into valley way.

wello in a westerly is one of the best spots around as well. nothing really on the goldy is any good in a westerly.

I also travel 40 to 50 min depending on whether I sail Wynnum, Manly, Wello or Viccy Pt. Shearwater is also just over 1hr away.

I love the sand on the broadwater, but dislike the boat traffic and current. Booties are essential at medium to low tide at Wynnum, Manly and Wello, I'm looking forward to Windfest and the sand at Burrum Heads

Well I know all the Wello guys think I am crazy - I live in Wello and sail at VP (S-SE-ESE) or Point Halloran (N-NE).
I used to sail regularly years ago at Wello but got sick of no parking spots, kids and adults swimming everywhere, no grass to rig on, mud, etc etc. So I now sail elsewhere and just love VP and that satisfies me, but we are all different!! I shouldn't say much more or VP will end up like Wello.....

i have to admit, its been at least 2 years since i had been to the train and went there on monday, and was shocked at both the amount & location of boats and now the jet skis you need to navigate around now.

the moored boats are a pain as they are in the "spot" and had to bear away a number of times to get round them.

Most slalom guys that have sailed both places would agree VP is much gustier than Wello unless its true south.
its not too bad if you just sail just in front of the beach where most locals sail.
But once you get out abit in front of the islands its full of holes and very patchy.
I'm use to long runs so its depends what you like i suppose.

sometimes the wind at VP is much much better up near the creek heading towards redy bay. where a certain fellow used to speed sail. Other times it is the opposite and it's much much better up the other end. of course there's those classic days it's good everywhere.

Yes I had my first ever sail at the Train over xmas and don't envy the Gold Coast crew in the slightest. Here's what I wrote in my GPSTC post
initially wind was okay but tide was high and big 'ken stink boats and jetskis made it pretty choppy. As tide dropped so did the wind as it swung more southerly causing it to be very up and down. None the less great to finally sail the Broadwater although would be much nicer without having to navigate around moored boats and a myriad of obstacles.

I sailed golden pond last weekend in a SE wind for the first time in years.

my god that place is not what it used to be.

Hey guys I might be a little bit naïve but do you think there would be some interest if I set up 2 buoys in front of the beach at Vic/p? It looks like a great spot for it, one just in front in sand and one on very r/h side, both in about chest deep water for easy water starting. I think that would be great for some social fun racing. I have it all set up and ready. Wanted to use it at GC but with the number of boats it would only work midweek and there're really not so many people interested I suppose. I'm using orange exhaust air jacks which are pretty big and visible but still easy to take out on water and can be quickly deflated for easier retrieval. As the anchors I use Coopers plastic anchors, only 1kg so very light and easy to take out with less danger to the board. Whole idea was to make it quick and easy so should take about 10 min to set up.

I'd be keen for sure. I'm on freemove gear but none the less count me in.

It would be for everyone. If there're number of guys on slow gear, they can run own group. If not they can have a 20sec or so head start and be chased like fox. And if Vando decides to come one day he would have to give us one lap head start, haha.

there's no fun in that, just start everyone together and see who's standing after the first mark.

I should introduce you to jinxy, he'll probably do a jump gybe at the first mark and a backloop at the finish line.

I guess I could give that a go too although I tend to like the free ride slalom I currently do otherwise you could go Bayside Slalom Racing. I guess if you were at VP and had out the markers you would end up with others following you round them as we are all a little competitive......

That's what I'm hoping for. When I saw guys following each other at VP I thought that would be a good place plus the fact that it's just in front and pretty shallow water is a bonus.

I suppose you could put the markers out for your personal use and deny responsibility for anyone else using them.

Forgive my ignorance but if we are members of a club and windsurfing outside an organised event are we not covered by Australian Windsurfing Association Insurance? I thought the benefit of being a member of a club was Liability Coverage even when not at an event? Otherwise those of us not competing in (for example) Bayside Racing means there is no point joining Bayside Sailboard Club. This would only discourage people from being a member of a club (paying the yearly fee) so not sure this sounds correct.

It's not like this for NKA (National Karting Association) as once you are a member you have insurance at any track you attend. The only difference is it's a race track so I guess it's not like social windsurfing wherever you want?

Can someone clarify this??????

If we are social windsurfing back and forth chasing each other what is the difference between this and going around set markers?

Personal use is the exact reason of these markers as I want to improve my jibes, selecting right approach etc. If someone else decides to join me I'll be more than happy. Nothing organised unless words "let's go, who will be back first" is classified as some part of organised movement.

insurance is no longer 24/7 and hasn't been for a few years now. the insurance covers you at an event organised by an awa affiliated club. like bayside, wanderers, wave club or any of the other interstate clubs affiliated with the awa.

other than insurance at the event the policy enables clubs to hold events. without the insurance MSQ will not provide an approval to hold a competitive event within qld waters. this is the same throughout Australia.

social events I believe do not need msq approvals but may need council approvals depending on council and local msq office. this is the stuff that gets organised behind the scenes by windsurfing club executives. no-one really knows it's being done until they get the job.

as soon as you have a "course" technically speaking that would need msq approval to hold an "event". that includes safety plans, boats, NOR etc. of course it's entirely up to the organiser if they feel they need to apply or not. it's their call. it is viewed by some that it's not worth the risk in case of injury to a windsurfer or a person from the general public.

going on a forum and announcing an "event" would make a person the "organiser".

if a couple of mates wanted to throw some buoys in the water and have a blast then it's hard to think that's an event. I suspect it becomes an event once you are publicly encouraging people to join in.

I got a great slalom sail on GC north of Crab island last weekend - north of yachtclub harbour - further north from sharewater - trees so no kites, less boats becasue you are north of the harbour, crab island removes the waves - & longer runs - down side is you can only sail 2hrs each side of high tide because it dries out at low - with a lot of east you can sail all the way down to soverign islands

its the boats that give me the ****s at shearwater - it is sooooooo busy atm

Not Buoys as such, "crabpot markers" that are slightly larger than normal, and are a diiferent colour to white

we're a pretty cruisey bunch at VP and we like a chat so stand around in the water a bit. you could use the boys as the buoys.
