Hi,

do you think its possible at all to sail this Friday at 35 knots with a 4.5 sail (80kg weight) or is that way too big?

Otherwise, is someone planning to go sailing and has got a 3.7 or 4.0 to spare? I've got a fitting NP 370 RDM Mast and small wave boom.

Cheers.

The problem is if Seabreeze forecasts 35 knots it usually gusting well beyond that. From looking at the BOM forecast I'd say it could be easily in the 40+ range when the front hits. It can be done with a 4.5 especially if you have a smaller board but it won't be much fun. Just go out and buy a 4.0... you know you want it.

Just had a look on Buy & Sell section. Give Jamie a call. He has a 4.0 on the market for $110 and he always looks after his gear. He is based in the Inner West so should be easy to pick it up.

I don't have much time tomorrow (basically lunch hour) so can only do Manly or even possibly Clontarf.

Would Clontarf be any good in a Southerly?? I've never sailed there. Longy/Makaha are too far....

Reef Bay:
Park at the end of Beatty Street, carry you gear to Reef Bay, rig on the beach, swim 20m and you are in the middle of the harbour with full strength southerlies (+5 knots, always stronger there).
and you can even jump the ferry wakes every half hour.

If Botany then Dolls Point, but more likely a bit further at Darook Park. The water is supposed to be cleaner there. (www.google.com.au/maps/place/Darook+Park/@-34.0744565,151.1497947,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x0f017d68f9f25a30)

Clontarf sounds interesting, is it a bit weaker? Where is the park & launch?

Won't do Reef bay for sure, it will be survival already and don't need an extra 5 knots plus a ferries coming through (won't probably going when its that much wind anyways).

Stehsegler: Thanks for looking up the sails, to be honest I'd rather not buy a 10 year old sail though and will continue looking for a used 4.0.

I asked a similar question about this area a couple of months ago and got some good replies. I remember Dean 424 giving some good feedback about middle harbor but I cant find the thread.

here's a few another link that I found: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/New-South-Wales/Clontarf/

I'm stuck in Melbourne for work, but back tomorrow and hoping the wind hold for Saturday. Enjoy your Friday session.

Interesting to see the forecast from seabreeze is different whether you look at:
or
- www.seabreeze.com.au/weather/nsw/sydney

Any reason for this?

Clontarf is the wrong angle unless SE. Manly (harbour) a better option.

Ben, (as you may know) Manly at Queenscliff end good if south and strong. If SSW it's so gusty it is just less hassle to head to the harbour.
I went past about 5pm and the surf is small but should still be only 3ft by lunch tomorrow so could be good esp. if the wind is up.

I'll be time poor as well so will check out Q'cliff in the morning for a potential sail before lunch.

I am going to Botany Bay, launch near the Shell. Alex I can throw in a 3.6m wave sail and matching mast if you like but that is probably too small. I aim to get there by 11am. If its too windy for me I will try to film you guys

Hey Tomp, do you sail Queenscliff typically with a gold/black NP sail? I sail there reasonably regularly with Severne Swats.

I'll hit up Queensie just after 12 for an hours sail.

Just been down to Manly. Dumpy, head high+ but some breaks in the sets. Very windy on the wave. Decided not to risk being the only one out! Clontarf very gusty, harbour best option around these parts.

Lucky you, you can get to Umina Beach, it loves these conditions.

Although I have tired of southerlies so much under the influence of a low pressure - too gusty..

Went out at Q'cliff after 1pm. Surf was pretty solid & patchy wind made it hard work.

Rig separated from board on second run after I got dumped by a big wave and had the swim of shame in.
After quick repairs made it out on round 2 second run. Swell was much bigger & breaking way out at the
Bombie. Stayed out and didn't catch any monsters but my arms had blown out so I came in after a while.

4.5m up which was about right but gusts over 30 knots for sure.

Didn't see anyone out in the harbour, looked like 4.0-4.5 wind.

I had a drive around and did some filming. Started at Botany where I recorded 36 knots max and you can see waves breaking over the runway and then at Clontauf and then at the harbour and then at Manly where Tom does a great self rescue and the at long reef where the wind was strongest on top of the hill.

^^ I was the bloke in the hoody retrieving Tomp's board. Manly looked a bit gusty and wild for me so I sailed off Reef Beach in the harbour. I was fully overpowered on a 4.2 so only stayed out for an hour before I did myself some damage.

For reference and as somebody else highlighted, Reef Beach seems to be a good option for those big out of control southerlies. About a 300 metre walk from Beatty Street but pretty easy as there is no wind at all behind the headland. My only mistake was carrying my gear out to the point and jumping off the rocks between the swells as there are loads of oysters and my feet got cut up.

You should have gone down to the launch point near the small grassy patch... it's usually another 10 knots down there as the wind accelerates around the headland.

Awesome to see the different spots. Thanks for sharing!

Kyeemagh on a 4.0 with a 80 litre eve board would have been the best option for today.

I was waiting for someone to turn up but in the end gave it a miss.(getting soft in my old age) Constant 40-45knots and blown out. Blew 2 metal power poles down in the top carpark. Keen for a sail this morning if the wind hangs in.

I went out at Budgy lake which is easy compared to surf but very high and choppy at the moment . Could have used my 3.2m + a 40 ltre board..
Didn't bring my small sails as intended to be finished by the time it came through ( heavy rain was forecast- ended up I got all the rain earlier ).
Blown off the water with a 4.2m revo + 68ltre Starboard acid..Only did a few runs in the lulls and then not game to really commit.
Survival sailing and decided to float in after a gust ripped everything out of my hands.Still a buzz!
Everyone survival sailing - read 38kts off point and it gets more out the middle - I'd say 30-35kts solid + a lot over 40kts
I've never had a decent sail with the 3.2m as it's a 90 model no twist one and very twitchy but I think yesterday it would have been perfect!Grr.. Not often we get consistently strong 35-40kts +.
