James - sounds great but I don't think they'll warranty a unit bought at the start of 2006!!
Don't bet on it.
I bought a Foretrex 101 from the US a few years ago and when the battery compartment terminals corroded, it was cactus. As it was bought from the US there was no local warranty; I think it was outside the warranty period, AND the battery compartment is explicitly not included in the warranty anyway!
Despite this, I called GE (something or other) (the Garmin repair centre in Sydney) and they happily told me that as long as I can present a damaged unit, they would replace it for their standard $140 (I think that was right at the time), and the new unit came with a 3 month warranty.
I was stoked, as a new 101 was still quite expensive back then.
On the other hand I bought a Navi-GT11 2 years ago for $120 and just recently bought a GT-31, so I would recommend getting a Navi as they are easier and faster to get the data off.
I still have the Foretrex 101 and now it's always used in an aquapac to avoid the original problem.
