I have just purchased a gt31 and set it up as per recommendations.
I used the old card from my gt 11 and it recorded for the first two sessions. The unit then froze so I have updated to the new firmware and it seems to be working fine but it now won't recognize the card
I tried :-
- resetting to factory settings before I updated the firmware
- two or three different cards that work in the gt 11
- a new kingston 2g card which I believe is one of the recommended card types

Any suggestions??

I would format the card but it is not a choice on the menu because the card is not being recognized by the unit. It is correctly inserted.

Which model of card do you have?
A lot of the new sdhc cards do not work I had to get a standard Sandisk 2 Gig SD which worked a treat, $17 JB HiFi
Also some the cards use different voltages 3.3v vs 3v so be careful.
If you put a card in and get "Bad Format" then you are good to go, format using the memory card menu as Elmo said.
If it worked in the GT-11 and does not work in the GT-31 that is a mystery.

I don't know what voltage it is because I have unfortunately thrown out the packaging before I had this problem. It is just one of the standard $10 cards that you buy. I have only purchased it recently.
If I format it in the gt 11 should that be set to go for the gt 31?

I just now put a Kingston 2GB micro card into my new GT31. The unit asked to format the card which it did OK. Now seems to recognise the card on bootup.
I did upgrade to the latest software prior to this.
I guess all this is not much help with problems though.

If you can't get the card working perhaps you may have another older card of lesser capacity in the house or in another gadget that will do the job. Many mobile phones come with smaller capacity cards that are physically in the micro SD format. Adaptors are available that allow them to be used as standard SD cards.

I have tried one of those. That's the type I have currently in my gt 11. I also just reformatted my current gt11 card - still doesn't work in gt 31

I was going to say make sure it's not locked but if it formates in the 11 it must unlocked. I don't really know but if it works in the 11 you'd think it would in the 31. Do you have any mates with a 31, if so try their card. You might have a dud, the 31 seems to be a bit of a problem child

We are having a bit of a team get together so I'll take it with me. More heads to problem solve etc.
I'm sort of thinking it might be a dud too as it was working and now its not but I was hoping for some good ideas to try.

Alewi62....Just wondering what firmware version you are using...We had heaps of freezing trouble with Lyn's GT31 and I was just about to return it for exchange, when I decided to appraise Locosys of the situation and found them extremely helpful.
They recommended to download and install Version V1.3B1015. I downloaded it but try as I might I could not get it to Execute on my unit. They also sent me a list of updates for the 31 which totals about 34 updates. It also details what each update is designed to fix. Previous to this and at this date I am running V1.3 B1123T
My contact also strongly urged me to turn off the Interval in the Data Logger prior to doing update. >>>>>>>

>>>Please wait until battery flat.
Plug USB cable to reboots the device. Once the device reboots again, go to [DATA LOGGER] page.
Set [INTERVAL] to off first.
Run [SAVE TO CARD] to copy log data to your SD card if needed.
Run [CLEAR] to clear log data.

If your firmware version is earlier than V1.3B1015:
Go to [SETTINGS]/[VERSION] , enter firmware update mode
Download GT-31 firmware V1.3B1015 from LOCOSYS website

GT-31/BGT-31 Firmware V1.3B1015 ( International Version) Please read Firmware Change Notes in zip file
http://www.locosystech.com/download/handheld/GT-31/GT31_FW_V1.3B1015_DVT3.ZIP<;<<<<

I think that everyone that has a freeze up should appraise Locosys of the fact.
I tried again yesterday to load the new firmware but again I could not get it to Execute.
Glad to report that both of our GT-31s have been working perfectly for the past fortnight. Maybe they just come good

Herb are you using the new gt31 updater, or the old GT11, cause I don't think the GT11 updater works on the GT31

Thanks Herbl & Lyn. I am running 1.3 B1123 as of yesterday when I updated. I tried to update to 1.3 B1015 with the interval turned off and it wouldn't work for me either. I don't have to worry about saving to the card and it isn't recognised by the unit
I will try locosys regards Anne

Yes I have tried all that -can't format in mine because card is not recognized. I have tried formatting on friends gt 31 and my gt11. Still no luck. I am waiting for locosys to reply. Card size is set to correct size.

Hi Decrepit, Yeah I use the GT-31 Updater and had no trouble with updating to
B1123T.
Anyway Lyn's unit has not been acting up for 2 weeks now, so will leave sleeping dogs
(and Logs) lie.

Anne, Hate to dredge this up but there is slight ambiguity in your post about Card Size.
Thats what it has to be set to and not any number.

Good luck with it.

Think we might need a definitive guide on latest firmware. I had downloaded V1.3C1015 from Locosys website. Seemed to work fine but I didn't look at Speed Genie. 15 minutes ago I was about to rig and head out into some pretty black looking stormclouds. No Speed Genie on my GPS. raced back home and downloaded V1.2B1405 from Mt Best website and Speed Genie back but a huge deluge of rain has taken all the wind.

Just downloaded and installed V1.3B1015. Seems to work and Speed Genie is there. V1.3C1015 has Chinese characters following it so I assume that V1.3B1015 is the one to use.

Herb I have tried lots of different cards sizes changing the unit setting to suit each card. No luck with any of them.
Used the gt 31 at the lake and was going to download data from internal memory but it is now frozen and won't turn off.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!

There is one setting for all cards, and that is "card size" as herb says, not any specific size, but the written words,
"card size" I think you have to scroll to the bottom of the list to get it.

I'm not sure this will help with your problem but.

Yep, I know warrior, but the trouble is people interpret that as the number that corresponds to their card.
I know, because somebody recently interpreted a post of mine that way, and it seems like alewi62 has done the same with your earlier post.

Thanks to everyone who gave me some imput with my GT 31 problem.
I sent it to locosys in Taiwan and Stacy Lee has just got back to me saying that
" It's short circuit on the SD socket, and it's fixed. "
Hopefully I don't have anymore problems
