OK, That makes sense. Your challenge is to repeat the speeds, same spot in a 20-30 knot SW!!!

That would be really nuts. Seems to be two discussions here. How fast slalom board? How fast in the LOC? I'm answering the first mainly. In a broad downwind slalom race that's not in open ocean, 28-33knots board speed not unheard of. In rough open water, say 25-28 knots board speed.

BTW I was using a KA 23 Symmy in that slalom board, so someone using a 28-32cm slalom fin would have a hard time keeping up when sailing broad.

So until we get an equivalent of the Beaufort scale for water condition ( if that's possible as a single, or even as a two or three number set), "How fast is a slalom board?" is a "How long is a piece of string?" sort of question.

But when someone does figure out a Beaufort scale for water condition it'll open up a multitude of extra categories for GPSteamchallenge.
For me, at my home spot, beyond the protection of the reef, out where the challenge is, 28 is the new 40.

My intention was to differentiate Slalom board ride on the choppy water to speed boarding on the absolutely flat water.
Getting above 30 ktn is real challenge for me, but for flat channel speedster getting above 40 could be walk in the park.

If we split the Slalom category into smaller groups. What we could expect from board like mine JP 118 L 68 cm when ridden by top sailor ?
I am still considering open bay condition rather not open ocean with chop/swell no bigger then 1 meter.
What could be ultimate sail size , fin size then for maximum speed for that board ? Is my 8.0 and 37.5 is ideal combination ?

If racing slalom rider approaching 35 ktn speed are using much smaller boards?

I am preparring for next annual Green Island marathon.
What do you think will be ideal set for 85 kg ? And wind up to 20- 25 ktn ?

if you put as much effort into sailing as you do into posting dribble on seabreeze then going over 30 knots wouldnt be such a hurdle for you.

Well we had 20-25 a couple years back for the event most were on 7s. you have to sail for an hour so pays not to go too big unless ya super fit

Thanks Vando . Last year I was on 7.4 but in amateur categories. Obviously when pro slalom started all passed me later on. What size board do you suggest , If condition similar to last year ?
I don't know your Bay at all and still experimenting with boards and sails

So, you are saying, rig an 8.5m then?

Oh, I just re-read it, and saw the 20 knots. Maybe a 10m?

I was on a IS97 that day gets pretty rough in the middle of the bay on a high tide.
Great Race the top 2 were neck to neck all the way to the finished where I pushed it too much and crashed 50m off the finish.
Managed a quick recovery though to get 2nd.
