Have anybody idea how fast good pro sailor is going on moderate rough terrain ?
What could be your guess , estimate or even exact data for this rider ?
or what are 2s peaks from Slalom Championships ?
If there is any link to view GPS recorded tracks from such events ?

Did he wear a GPS or is this ancedotal. 31kn average over 25minutes in open ocean - that is outstanding by anyone's means.

That's not fact. not at all.
I think there was a gps track of the course from another sailor. Calculated over the distance sailed (25km) and the time taken (24.5min - record time) i think it averaged out around the 30knt mark.
But again, don't quote me

That is damn impressive for 25 minutes on the open ocean!

I'll guess 28 knots at times, ( I'd say that video is on moderately smooth terrain). 31knots for the LOC is something else again.

But I've no idea what Robbie's gps max would have been here. Any guesses?

25k in 25mins is 1km/minute = 60km/hr. = 32.4 knots.

That might be possible on a downwind open water course and if it includes Gybes then it would be very good indeed. The LOC result quoted begs the question of how the distance was measured.

Typically, beam reaching fully powered in 25+ knots with a smallish slalom board on flat water I can pull 30-32kts. Taller, heaver guys can probably see 35 knots which is about what Brad Anderson was peaking at in his GPS World Record 1 hr at Lake George last summer. Hard to see even the best top slalom sailors doing this on rough, open water beam reaching, but IMHO, they could possibly be going low to mid 30's sailing broad.

On larger gear on moderate 18-20 knots of wind it would probably be mid 20's.

Here is a section of B-Rad's 1 hr track at Lake George last summer. Remember this is small slalom board (or large speed board depending on how you look at it) with 28-30 knots of wind and I think about a 5.8m slalom sail.

I dont think many sailors would get to 30knts in the LOC. I'm no pro, the best i have done in 28knts in approx 25knts with a 7.0m and Iso 90. The max speeds are very hard to maintan as there are many air moments and the landings sometimes wash off your speed along with large swells. I very much doubt anyone would average anywhere near 30knts of speed for the race. Very few competiors would get to 30knts on the the last leg inside the lagoon just before the finish let alone our the back in the swells/chop.
Just my opinion though.

nc 5 would average at 28/29 I guess, keep in mind he's sailing in smooth conditions there. but the guy is fast, he's quite short and not heavy at all....

he's a smart bugger though, he used the helico shooting opportunity to practice for the next race that was exactly on the same location, and he won...

Dunklebeck is s awsome speed sailor on the open ocean.hes title still stands at 43 knts averaged over 500 mtr runs thats ridiculous! Beat that?

The lake events are small easy chop/swell, but Mooloolaba and Bribie events will be much more challenging.
Tomorrows forecast looks good for so we will see..
I think the winner at the inaugural Green Island event in June was in the mod to high 20's!

Great video! Very different in and out speeds I reckon. Bender is probably pretty close to the money, I reckon high 20s out low 30s in. I was interested to see the different stance out and in. Going out it looks all about downforce, both legs are bent, the torso quite vertical. Coming back in they get a chance to push the front leg straight and really power up.

In the Turkey PWA Slalom event this year they put GPS units on the top sailors to see who was the fastest for 1000 euros. Antoine Questel was the fastest man peaking at 68 km/h which is 36.7 knots. and I am pretty certain he did that on an 8.6 and 107L.

"The speediest male windsurfer was found to be Antoine Questel with a speed of 68km/h and the speediest female Delphine Cousin at 49km/h. Of the Turkish surfers, Dilara Uralp recorded 49km/h while Lena Erdil reached 44km/h. Find it difficult to believe anyone could average 31 knots in the LOC. Other marathon races sure,no problem. It is one those events where you might get a faster overall time the lighter the wind,such is the height of the swell. High 20's maybe. I remember watching Steve Allan at South Beach Fremantle win the Aust Slalom Championships a decade plus ago. He won every race in 25 knots in difficult chop hands down! Except the last race where he went over the handle bars TWICE but still finished third. The way he was making up ground on the second placed sailor 200 metres ahead after catapulting was unbelievable. Then he went over the front again!

I'd like to see that track to verify it wasn't a spike! Were the speeds from other guys close to that?

I recon someone would have a GPS track from last years LOC and also from that Long distance down and back sprint they do in the south of France.

I think it would be possible to do those speeds there it would have to be the flattest spot that they race on.

I've got GPS data from several NZ windsurf Nationals.
Best guy I could find to wear a GPS finished 3rd/4th the past few years.
Good fast, competent sailor but never on the latest gear, often 5 year old stuff. 6.2 sail, 25-28 ks wind.
Course has 450 mt run between marks.
He generally hit 32kts between marks.
15-17 kts through mid gybe.
Mile average 26.5kts during a race.
Peak was 36 kts on last leg of a heat in a big gust.

Reliable wind, so far 6 years, never skunked....get over here you Aussies and find out how fast you are between the buoys!

I did the ledge point in 2000 and did it in a time of 27 mins I came second in the amateurs
Anders bringle won it in 25.5 min
I was on mark peterson race weapon and 6.2 m blowing 25 knots
No gps so don't know what my top speed was

I'll be wearing 2 x GT31's in the LOC so we'll see. Best I've managed in Port Philip Bay in 25 - 30 knots of breeze, 5.5 KA Race and CA SL53 is around 35-36knots peak with most downwind legs averaging around 31knots. Factor in gybes and you're probably looking at 30 knots flat. 28 knots average downwind slalom racing is about as slow as you'd want to go or you'll be last!

Not having a go Adrian, but if you get a 30kn average for the LOC i'll buy you 20 cartons of Coopers Pale Ale and have it shipped to your office. I suspect if you do you'll win the race too.

If you average 30 knots in the LOC you'll win by the length of the last two legs.

I finished top ten in 2011, 2 or 3 minutes behind the winner with a best NM at a little over 26 knots.

I recall the chop in Port Phillip Bay as horrendous. I think you'll find the Indian Ocean a breeze.

Yep pretty hard to to the speeds Adrian is talking about on the Bay except for a couple of spots. Rye between the sand bars in a Northerly and Swan Bay. Pt Cook in a Northerly. I saw Slowy do 36 inside the reef at Rickets but he is a freak!!
Generally most places you a doing well to see a 30 of any kind.

Hey Lovvie, Spotty's managed 40 at Rye and I've even managed a 38 one sec peak at Pt Cook. Slowy is def a freak. He would have been going 2 knots faster than me probably. Here:

The day I was referring to above was at St Kilda in a pretty strong northerly and yes, it was very scary. The average run speed was 31-32 knots and I was sailing out about 1km and very broad. The 2 sec peak speed was 35.6ish. So the chop was not massive, maybe 30-40cm tops. Here:

Anyway I wasn't racing anyone, just blasting so I find that can make a difference, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. I find if I'm chasing someone I can sail a bit faster and if someone's chasing me, I get distracted and sail slower! Go figure!

OK, That makes sense. Your challenge is to repeat the speeds, same spot in a 20-30 knot SW!!!
