the graph above doesn't really do it justice as the table points out. if the graph showed daily max wind speed it would read a lot higher.

where do you find those graphs on BOM? can't seem to find them

It will make flying with gear easier lets see 5.6 SP50 should cover it

they are in km/hr but i don't think anywhere else in oz really gets such consistent winds with the fiji scenery.

Choco check this photo from last June or July, it's young Troppo on 50L Isonic with a 5.8 Koncept at high tide, it was gusting 40+ up the GI weather tower (reads a little high)
Speedweek will be low tide and flat water.

Wow that looks wild.........i can really see the effects of too much rum drinking....those sail numbers must have been made during a good session

There are 3 issues I need to emphasise
1.All competitors must have public liability cover (with their local state windsurf association)-I cant emphasise this enough !!!
2.The logistics of organising speed week have been signficant -it would be very helpful for me to know ASAP who is coming & on what day you are arriving -we cant expect the Great Adventures Operation to realistically cope with say 100 windsurfers arriving at the Reef terminal with 300-400 pieces of luggage to be transferred to the Island without signficant forewarning & planning.
3.If you wish to enter the open ocean race on Thursday you must bring life vest/flares/helmets /backpack for us to meet the minimal safety standards required by Windsurf QLD protocols

Website looks great, well done.

I'm all booked to arrive 20th June and depart 2nd July. Will stay at Park Regis City Quay for first 5 nights, then Green Island for three nights, then touring around for a couple of days with my wife (who has told me she has a completely full itinerary that does not include windsurfing)!! Planning to bring 2 boards and conplete rigs via Virgin (hopefully)?

Can we book/buy flares in Cairns? Don't reckon it'd be a good idea to try to bring them over on the plane!!

The speed courses look like they are Port tack. Is this correct? If so all out Starboard tack fins will be useless!

Andrew you are correct -the fastest Runs are done on Port Tack -good excuse to get working on some port tack asymmetricals-have to talk to Chris/Mal /Boogie about this ...
I'll start compiling a list with arrival days etc.
Will arrange to get some flares at wholesail price for those wishing to enter the open ocean race...
I'm interested in the asymmetrical issue-does anyone currently make port tack ASY fins& can you still get back up wind with the ASYs or is it always a walk ??

I am 50/50 at present. Sailpilot (Phil) is very keen as well and we are currently talking about driving up together on the Wednesday for Thursday start on GI. Will stay till Sunday if coming.

BTW - What are the exact requirements and details for Ocean Race i.e. Safety equipment, Flares, etc. and will course be a square run out and back or otherwise? Would be very keen to do this race.

Time Machine (Mal Wright) and KA (Lockwood) assys are all Starboard tack. Both have a symmetrical larger speed fin, TM 26 speed and KA 23cm.

I understand that C3 (Boogie) has assy speed fins for only starboard tack as well but has a small 24cm slalom symmetrical slalom fin.

The TM and KA assy fins go fine upwind but of course the board 'crabs' more than with a symmetrical fin.

The TM 26 sym is a great all round speed fin for those who don’t won’t a dedicated speed fin. Great for those not so perfect conditions and works on both tacks. I tend to run it with the Kids Pro S and the CA40 and the fin has done a 40+ 5x10 at the Pit. Tom also building them with a scratch resistant finish that makes the fin almost bullet proof. Well worth considering

Fin discussion has been very helpful -Roo could you give us more details re the fins you guys are using.
Sausage & sailpilot-its been a long term aim of mine to have an open ocean race off Green IS-the seas out wide can get to 3-4 m & the strong steady wind makes for ideal & challenging open ocean racing -We'll be aiming to run the course parallel to the swell ...
I've been playing around out wide for the last 12/12 & have used various boards including the isonic 50 /the f2 sx small/the Naish 95sp/& various wave boards.
THE Current plan is to run a triangular shaped course from Green Island -initially up wind for 1-2 klms then a square run in to Cape Grafton with a return run back to the Island finishing at the finish line of the Eastern Speed Run .
We have to be prepared to be flexible on this one though as we have to consider the plight of the 3 Rescue Boats !!
Would imagine an 85 l wave or 85-95l slalom board working well ...Hope this helps.

Hi Roo. I assume these are the Curtis designed fins you brought here last year? Who do I contact to find out pricing and order? Are you selling them?

G'day Cam,

Curtis handbuilds the fins for me using a template that dates back to the late 1980's, very similar to the Spitfire elliptical planform. We've updated the foil sections with some designed to delay cav until around 53 knots. They are available through me by special order, contact me via email for more details. Curtis and I have been working on them for the last three years and slowly refining them, they are available in both port and starboard tack assy versions in 20, 22 and 24 cm sizing. There's a 26 cm symetrical version which has only been up to 42 knots so far. I have optimised the fins to work on narrow tail speed boards like the CA 40, 44 and 47, the Naish SP60 etc. They create more lift under the tail that allows you to ride the fin more and ride back on the rocker to reduce wetted surface area.

In middle of winter the Green Island Speed Week sounds great,
very tempting not too sure if I can arrange the logistics in time for the Trans Tasman journey.
Does International Travel Insurance cover the Insurance/ Public Liability for this event?

Here in Auckland the local custom, Kite board, Windsurf board & Fin maker Bruce has Port tack Asymmetrical Fins.
These Fins are "True Asymmetrical",
you may think they are Extreme Asymmetrical as one side is almost dead flat giving them a very thin profile,
being molded from Carbon they are very strong.
Even with no profile on the starboard side its possible to sail up wind with these Fins, just requires skill.

Some of the sizes go down to 16cm.
Not sure if Bruce will release these Fins into the Public domain,
but if you guys are interested PM me, remember the NZD is quite attractive compared to the USD & EURO.

Icesurf -best bet for you re public liability is to sign on as member to one of the local QLD Sailboard Clubs-this will provide the liability cover you need

Great work Cam. Decided its time to get into the forum. Got the room booked and ready to go. Ist visit to the island planned for this Wed. and keen as. Hope to get to meet with some of the FNQ mob and check out this paradise.

Bumped into a couple of guys from Townsville on the weekend & they're coming up for it too. Can't wait!!! It's gotta get windy!!

Had my first sail at Green Island last week. What an awesome place!
Blue water, no wetsuit and sunny 30 degrees, what more could you want.

Great place to sail even when you aren't on the flat water.

Thanks to Cam for organizing the speed week, I'm coming back from Darwin for the week.

i've received a few emails from some of the competitors at the burrum event.

for those that joined wanderers club to access the insurance to be eligable for the event. your insurance will also cover you for the green island speed event as the wanderers is an affiliated club with WQ.

A couple of other issues for competitors/prospective competitors
1.I've Sailed the northern run a few times now mid to late afternoon & the Western Sun makes visibility without polarised lenses very difficult-would strongly suggest bringing a pair or two of polarised lens for the event .
2.The Great Adventures operation Manager has informed me that they are willing to take up to 12 sailboarders & gear per island Run (there is a little flexibility here)
There are boats departing 830 am 1030 am 100 pm so understand these limits & plan to book ASAP
3.Be very careful booking airfares with Jet star if you are carrying sailing gear-many of their flights have strict length limits-DONT get Burned...
4.Booties are a really good idea for Green Island -coral reef cuts are very common & best prevented .
5.There are no Supermarkets on the island & no facilities for inhouse cooking -just so you are informed.There are restaurants & bars on the island along with clothing/souvenir stores -the need to purchase meals needs to be factored in to your budget.

The Last Sunday is actually Green Island Birthday Celebrations so there will be a huge sausage sizzle ...
We're negotiating with Big Cat Cruises to help out with return Transfers on the Sunday so all should be fine .
Quite a few guys are staying over longer
Some of the locals may have to leave gear with Toodie on the Island.
Should all work out fine ...

Accomadation booked! Now just to sort out flights, transfers, what gear to bring, how to cut the baggage weight etc.etc.etc.
Any other WA guys keen to join?
