funny how we all think the same. I reckon working in with a farmer who needs an irrigation pond-('dam' over there?) would be the go.
Just south of Chch someone built a lake of the size you're talking about for his mad keen water ski sons. Trouble is, he then planted trees all around it!!!

That's the first thing on my list after I win Lotto......off to talk a farmer into building a new dam perfectly angled for the Norwester.

I think it would be easier to just build earth walls by pushing them up instead of digging a trench as long as the topography is nice and level.

Wind flow would be affected slightly, even if you had long batters.

Any channel would have to de dug / constructed in a suitable soil type to retain the water or have a large water supply nearby to keep it supplied

Choco if you get this one up I will come and work on it for free

Best place to build it would be close to the sea,you could then dig a connection channel to let tidal water flow in and use a simple gate system to keep the water in there.
Here's an example of the type of area that would suit,this spot is at the top of Spencer Gulf in SA the land is very flat and there's easy access to sea water.

Bloody good idea i say, another good spot would be near port wakefield .

Port Wakefield area has alot of potential! St Kilda has similar terrain and is much closer to the city as well.

And did you run it through FPC or another program, orrrrr even better did you just calculate it out?
If you ran it thorough FPC whats the most efficient fleet mix? (I could do it at work but am too lazy)

This man made canal could have potential!! Especialy for 1 hrs and NM as it's 50 km long. Wind was a solid 20-25 knots cross off-shore!!

Suez??? having seen the size of some of the ships using this I suspect that wind shadows could be an issue

I wish I could use a non de plume for what I am about to type

In the very early 90's I got a contract with a large earthmoving contractor doing "irrigation canals" in Dirranbandi (south western queensland).

Within hours of looking at the site plans I realised that these canals were going to harvest water from the flood plain and even divert water from the river at one point (during a minor storm event). As I was wet behind the ears, I went looking for the DA/CC/ environmental approvals docs, (and even more embarassing) when I didnt find them I rang the project manager.

You can guess the response. It began with son, had the words city and go back there in his diatribe.

Sadly I completed the job and left without fulfilling the rest of my contract - but during the 12 weeks I was there I found this to be a common practice at large farms where they had access to the condamine - balon.

When I look back now it is with shame

Being red, I gather these would be the fastest speed canals going around.

cant speak with any authority since I worked only on one set -obviously size would depend on the topography, ease of shifting the material etc etc.
The ones I worked on were roughly 650m long x 40m x 4m deep

Maybe we should just rent one of the sand blowing barges they used to build this then we can build one anywhere, gotta be easier than digging I am sure with the financial state of dubai at the moment they would be cheap too

Arabic interest in the weather and in the different types of winds blowing across the desert stems from the Bedouin tribes, for whom changes in weather could mean the difference between life and death. For them, each wind had its own characteristics and was known by a different name; thus, the main period of storms was Al-Barih al-owd, while the minor storm period was called Al-Barih al-sagheer. Seen a doco on how they built palm island,looked bloody good for windsurfing but did'nt see anyone out and it was windy,like i said in earlier posts there's an election coming up and the government opens up it's purse for sporting clubs(to buy votes).
Gee that looks awesome everyone could have their own private speed run.

This is a video of some dudes windsurfing a irrigation drain.. i know there are some guys in vic who speed sail irigan drains over near the west coast side of VIC.. They work great there been doing it for years..

I remember hen I was at Goondiwindi, there are massive, very long, man-made dams there with high walls for the cotton farms. Dunno about good wind or angle etc though, That was before my sailing dayz.
