What would you suggest buying for a first time gps unit.

I've never used one before, but all I want is to find out how fast I've just gone on a run, so I can work out how to go faster. (And to see where my perception diverges from reality.)

Doesn't need to be top of the line, but functional and user friendly.

What models would you suggest? What should I look out for?

Purchased a Gt31 yesterday as my Christmas present to myself from my wife

I think there is more support for it in the sense there is continued firmware development and Dr Tom is a speedsailing devotee so it helps to have the distributor and a very competent computer programmer on our side, help from fellow users of the navi product is also much better than other products .

Makes a good choice couldn't see you going wrong with it .

Just do it !

Navi GT-31

+ 1

A Garmin will do to start with, but as you get better at data analysis you'll discover that the NAVI is a much better unit. You'd be better off getting the NAVI at the start.

You can get a Garmin Etrex H for about $120 and it will do what you say you want...
BUT,,.... if ever you get serious you will get a GT-31.

What ever you get, keep it dry.

RPS in Elwood . Best advice and very friendly bunch .
Price is around $250 for the unit and about $30 for a waterproof arm pack.
add $12 for a 2 gig SD card from Office works and your all set .

Sick em Rex !

For sailing use you should only consider the Navi's. They have many advantages specifically for windsurfing, especially the GT-31 with its Speed Genie'. Either a GT-31, or if you want a cheaper solution, get a second hand GT-11. There are a few around as many of the more dedicated speeders change over to the GT-31. I have seen GT-11's change hands for somewhere around $100. Try asking around amongst the GPS Team Challenge teams.

Advantages: Huge memory (SD card), long battery life, Speed Genie on GT-31, Compact file format, The only GPS that records the Doppler speed info to file (GT-11 and GT-31) and records an estimate of it's accuracy (GT-31 only). Just to mention some.

Dont forget to tell Tristan how often Navi's brake down.
Save the hassle and get a Garmin.
