Practically everything that is even a slight deviation from dedicated tri fin wave has a power box middle fin.


It really is the type of fin that dictates how hard you can push on it and how fast you can make the board go. There are some really rockered freestyle wave boards out there, as soon as you put wave fins in them any thoughts of back foot pressure/speed is cancelled. Wave fins slide out really easily if you're used to back foot pressure, weed wave fins do allow you to push a bit more (despite what was said earlier).


but its Pauls baby, and he's made the decision so thats that. I know exactly what its like running an event and having everyone else trying to redesign the rules and change what you want the event to be.

I like how some people just **** on other people's skills. I mean, if you cant do a planing gybe, then really you should just give up on life all together.

What about a minimum age you need to be and then you can use a powerbox board. 50? 55? 60?

Paul I think if you say old ppl can, then you need to consider heavy folks. Then you're back in the same problem as AA shows up with a Dyno ..

Dam I wish we had an event like this in the uk , would be more bump and jump event than wave rally.
I would agree with the rules if we were lucky enough to have some one set this up for us.

Pauls comp people, all done out of his own good intensions of giving back and having fun.

Make it to hard for him then working and going for a sail himself looks more apealing than organising an event.

Just MPO as a heavier old basket with two old single fin FSW boards which I only ever use weed fins and big sails on.

Yeah gotta agree with keeping it in the wave board theme , just makes sense given the name of the event and all ..... your vision .

Unlike the 1st event, the 2026 one will have medals for podium finishers. Just got them in the mail. I think they turned out pretty good!

With a fair bit of consultation with a few people, Wave Rally has decided to let 'FreeWave' boards with 'PowerBoxes' back into the event however there is a restriction. There are quite a few sailors down in Perth where this is the only type of board they have and we don't like excluding them.

Last year the FreeWave boards had a big advantage when the winds were marginal as sailors could put a big middle fin in and set the boards up with 4 footstraps outboard. With that in mind, the rules are you can't have more than 3 footstraps and the fin is restricted to the sizes on the chart according to your weight. It's a handicap to the sailors with FreeWave boards as they will have to purchase smaller fins than what come with the board as standard. Since the boards are generally flatter rockered I think this is a fair compromise to make the event appealing to as wide an audience as possible.

As an example of the changes, Albert who won last year on a Dyno was on a fin pushing 30-35cm, however according to these new rules, he would have to use a 22cm fin at his weight.

I have contacted K4fins in the UK to try and source some powerbox wave fins for those who turn up at the event with too big a fin but hopefully the message is loud and clear and sailors with these type of boards will sort themselves out before hand. I know the powerbox boards caused a few issues last event however with the new fin & sail size restrictions I think this a good solution.

Any sailors who enter Wave Rally with a powerbox freewave board will be required to register their boards at the admin tent and we can check the fin size.

Hi Paul, Can you please advise if sail numbers are required for this event ? I take it they are not as the rashies presumably numbered supplied by event organisers for temporary competition use will identify the sailors and replace the sail numbers. Is this correct ? Hi RichardG yes that's correct. No sail numbers are needed. You wear numbered event rashies for the heats.

Well WAVE RALLY 2 just happened and it went off. Massive thanks to the sponsors, volunteers and entrants for helping take the event to new heights.

It was decided to run the 3 day event window with a 2 day competition as the Sunday had little wind and swell. And that was the right decision because we had epic conditions for the Friday and Saturday.

Friday we were able to complete 40 heats, 10 minutes apart in 25 knots of wind with great waves. This was the first time Wave Rally was able to showcase the event's concept in firing conditions and it didn't disappoint. Fast paced exciting action tested all the riders and even though the heats lasted around 6 minutes it was surprising how much of a workout it was!

Saturday the wind and waves continued and it culminated in the weight category finals and 'Championship Final' which saw Anton Pain a Geraldton local become the Wave Rally World Champion! Jesper Orth won the sailing race back to the beach however Anton's younger legs gave him the win in the epic beach sprint. Wait till you see the video it was classic. Albert Pijoan last years champ came in third to complete a well deserved podium place.

Special mention to Avan Griffith who was probably the fastest sailor on the water however got unlucky with a beach start and fell on an outside gybe which saw him lose the opportunity to make the Mega Final.

It really was an epic few days and I was able to get great footage which will help me secure more sponsors and funding for the future.
