Board damage from the extension below.

You get the same damage from the mast or extension. The clip is concentrating it in one spot to save you a bigger repair.

My sails probably have less padding than the Ezzy sails, I don't want to mention the brand negatively here since I've never had an issue with any other style of clip regardless of sail padding. The new chinook clip protusion acts as a point load onto the board deck so would probably cause damage through most built in pads. I've swapped out my clip for the old style and have added some EVA foam around the bottom of my extension and mast that fits under the sail luff sleeve. I'll only use that when wind is light and waves are dumping, when I'm likely to get washed a lot.

Agree with Mark, can't see the damage being much different without the pin clip, certainly less of a protrusion but still plenty of potential for impact from a normal non clip collar if the sails you're using don't have much padding in that area! (yes the Ezzys have good padding down there and so do all of my KA Sails which I use more than Ezzys).

What others have suggested, i.e. a clam style ring collar, could be less of a problem as would likely be more flush with the mast and less protruding, tho think that having sufficient padding around that area (as you've worked out) is the key to avoiding further damage

I was suspicious of the plastic collar at first but then liked it for its easy adjustability and no pin to lose in the sand. However I then went on to snap the plastic pins and the plastic collar on landing a jump flat. I'm guessing that's why Chinook moved away from them.

A few more pictures to illustrate how ridiculous the Chinook design is. Note how the corner of the new clip can point load on impact with the deck, compared to the round clip that has no points to load, and is far more likely to be protected by the built in mast pad. I've never had this issue in 30 years with round clips.

I've got the same Chinook as Ryan (middle in photo) but worse, it actually came with the old style 'ring-with-a-pin-on-a-string' style clip (top) and I sprung for the new 'Ryan-style' clip from a shop cuz it looked like a better design. I'll reinstall the old one.

The Chinook on the bbottom has Imax style. Hasn't seen any use as I don't yet have an SDM mast.

the Simmer on the top is actually my favorite, and it has the clam style clip. Will be buying more of those clips I think.

Off topic, the reason I like the Simmer is because the pulley and cleat mechanism is so small, the cleat is closer to the centerline of the mast than the Chinooks. As I get close to max downhaul, the line is still pulling the tack straight down. With the Chinooks, the line is pulled away from the mast in the last few CMs.

You don't want to use the new style collar with the old extension. The holes are not front to back oriented & so the clip could more easily dent the board.. If you have the new extension tube it's a no brainer... just align the clip with the pulley & it can't hit.
