One common theme that a lot of chats came about is, there's a local mast made by Slake, I think they're from Formula Windsurfing or similar, not sure, seems to be adaptable for the various brands, could be very helpful.

BTW, I think I may have been very off the mark on the Starboard Phantom 377L board pricing. 2015 close out was possible around AUD 4,000, new boards I think maybe a bit more, but I'll leave that to the Starboard Dealers to offer MRSP. Sorry of I misquoted or misrepresented pricing as accurate. Not intentional.

@Duff12, I think you hit the nail on the head. Training may be the key.

Some of the local NSW Long Board Clubs, Dubroyd Aquatic Club (DAC), St Georges River Sailing Club (St George) to name but a few, seem to be onto it for the training and as the Open Fleet continues to grow including DII's, hopefully we'll see some fun training, social sailing and I'm sure top end racing coming the fore. I'm sure the other state's such as Queensland, Victoria, WA, SA, TAS and ACT and of course our friends from NZ and New Cal. have this well in hand too.

Not to forget there's a strong Wally fleet Nationally, who may wish to add another board (Race Board) to the quiver?

How would the Ezzy 9.5 m2 Lion 3 (2016) compare in terms of performance ?

What fin size do race boards typically run with this type of 9.5m2 sail.

Are there any competitors in the Eastern states using Mistral Equipe Mark 1 LCS XR i.e. circa 1985-1989 (Harold Iggy Shape) ?

Are these boards (Mistral Equipe Mark 1 LCS XR i.e. circa 1985-1989) considered competitive or obsolete and off the pace ?

For me Ok, short version. Tried the NP 7.2 twin cam in under 8 knots on Saturday, fun to try the Mistral Pan Am Raceboard for a quick sail, massively underpowered. Yes I get it, I was told an 8.5 would even be light on. But it was great to be on the water though.

Then thought, time to seriously checkout the 9.5m options locally.

First option was a new Severne Raceboard Sail 9.5m after the positive comments earlier it's about $1,300 new, nice and still very much liked. Then got some details on the Aerolite Dark Race 9.5m, which I thought would be really expensive, but have been told I can get one in about a week in Australia new for about the same price as the Severne. Masts and booms seem the same. Only problem is new, both are still a bit expensive for the current budget. Not going to post a pictures of the Severne, everyones done that earlier, so here's a couple of pics of the Aerolite Dark Race 9.5 that were sent through.






End result, pulled the trigger today on a second hand RSX 9.5 that needs a little repair, just have to get on the water and looking forward to using the 9.5.

Hopefully will get to try out the Severne and Aerolite soon and add one as the light wind sail and keep the RSX for heavy weather sailing.

Would be great to read some comparisons between the other options though for the light wind sails.

for sure 8 knots is light, light winds
to get out and have fun, i try to go with a minimum of 20 kph / ~ 10 knots
in that wind with an 8.0/8.5 m² sail it is good fun
with a larger sail like 9.5/10 it can be more work - and faster obviously
if you are going from a 7.2 to a 9.5, be ready for a workout
those sails are a pain to uphaul
stay shallow while practicing and you can lean the clew on the bottom in shallow water since the fins are small
even an 8.5 can be difficult to uphaul if you are tired

as far as Mistral Equipe One goes, it is a great board that goes in a large range of conditions
have used mine in 7.0 conditions/30-50 kph winds with no issues while shortboard buddy was struggling
here is a run with a MS TR-6 8.4 race sail in light winds - 20-30 kph winds
did i need a 9.5 - not really - not racing ...

I have found the Severne Raceboard to have a great life, at the start of this season I stopped using my old one that I bought second hand in 2011. It gets used twice a week through the season so that is about 50 outings a season. Had to use more down haul as it got older to keep the cambers on the mast during manoeuvres. I bought a new one a few years ago and only used that for championships and it is now my everyday sail. Very happy with the life time performance of them. That works out pretty cheap on a per use basis, use them a lot and it is a cheap sport!

I can see another option would be the race board sails from Exocet XO sails and the compatible Exocet mast.

I take it they could BOTH be obtained from the following website perhaps for the price the same as the Severne sail on its own.

That seems a possibility as long as the shipping costs are not prohibitive.

if if someone can explain why the RSX9.5 is the high wind sail please?

i would've thought it was for light winds & a 8.5 ish for strong winds?.

ive just brought a Equipe 1.5 XR LCS, I think I will continue to add to my selection of Sailworks retros, so buy a 8.5 & maybe the NX 9.5.
mostly as I can use the same masts for various sails as they are all designed for constant curve.
Once you get locked into a brand it's hard to shift.
Practice will be the key for us back markers

I think it's because the RSX sail is a stiffer sort of sail designed around a board more suited for planning than not.

What you really need is an old thrashed 7.4 IMCO sail!

Made a little vid cruising around on my bright pink IMCO this and last summer, the board make the perfect floating bar!

I am leaving germany tomorrow to join you at the Worlds.
I booked a Severne as charter sail but as this is much heavier than my usual sail,
I just organised that I can ship my Aerolite Black 9,5 2016 to Brisbane as well.
This sail is from my point of view the best on the market and in Germany nearly all top raceboard surfer use it.
And different from what is always published it is not a pure lightwind sail.
It is best between 2-14 knots, it works still fine until 18 knots, it can be handled until 22 knots, it gets real work above 22 knots but still can be used.
But if you have really CONSTANT wind above 16 knots we are switching to the RSX depeding on the course diagramm.

As the costs for the shipping are quite high, I would we willing to sell it for a reasonable price after the worlds, so somebody interested could benefit by sharing the shippment costs. The sail is in very good condition and it is the black "pro edition".Looking forward to see you in Brisbane!

knwell I'm pretty happy with my Sailworks NX 9.5

Wind Surf Systems was able to get Bruce Petterson of Sailworks to modify a 9.6 for me. I've used it up to mid 20kn too. While it wouldn't be my personal choice in that wind, mostly due to my inexperience, but I easily survived it & enjoyed it too!
I'm just as fast on a smaller Retro in the mid 20s

Very easy to rig & so easy to sail, feels very light on the Aeron carbon boom. I reckon I prefer it to my retros too!
The cams flip quite easily, needs a good flick in no wind, but no issues from 8kn up.
