This starts a small localised delam, which can quickly spread under the pumping action of riding in chop. Undoing the vent then allows more air in, so the delam can keep growing. A hollow board has nothing to delam from so the whole thing just slightly expands and contracts evenly, unless exposed to very unusual extremes they should only need a bung to let out any water that's seeped in.

Mike, do you have any idea how common delams are where the sandwich cleanly separated from the foam, as opposed to delams where parts of the foam stick to the sandwich, and the foam breaks internally. I've seen both, but I wonder which type happens more often - especially in situations where the vents are intended for, like flights (or perhaps if there's a bit of water in the board).

No Peter, I've also seen both, and it may depend on manufacturer the clean delam is probably poor adhesion and the broken foam, is either poor foam or lots of fatigue.
The Mistrals I fixed surprised me, there was very good evidence of resin soaking 5mm to 15mm into the foam, the build quality was excellent. I guess I should have removed a foam sample and tested it for tensile strength, against some of the foam I use. I think that depends how well the individual "beans" are stuck together.

Edges sanded , clear coated and matt buffed .
Sugar coat is on . Sugar is still on it . Should blend in nicely .
Although the board is butt ugly , It's nice and smooth .
Im happy how it ended up and glad i saved it .



Even though you can obviously see where the operation was , it kind of blends in with all the other stuff going on .
Thats foam stuffed in the mast track so resin didn't dribble into it .
Next , wash off sugar and make dual density foot pads .

First test run today . Very happy
Proper windy and gusty and rough . Overpowered on a 6.4 . 46cm pointer.
29.06 kts , 2 sec . It felt great in less than ideal conditions . It should easily go over 30 kts . It didn't feel that fast , which i think is a good sign .
My estimation of around 160 litres is off . Id guesstimate around 145.
Planes early and didn't do anything weird . Because of the challenging conditions and my lack of skill i can't yet comment on its gybing .
Smooth in the chop and quicker than its bigger brother .
I soo hope it holds together .

Had another great day on it yesterday , effortless swift ride , I'm in love .

Sadly it's is not holding together .
I used inferior materials , glued a gassing foam core and a too light and crumbly sandwich divinycell. The contact that I stuck the divinycell is separating . It's not the glues fault . It's peeling a layer of dust off the crumbly divinycell . The glue sticks great to a good quality sadwhich material and the Eva rails . I'm so happy with the design and the way it works that I'm going to copy it exactly . Construct it slightly different .Ill only use glue on the Eva rails . I've ordered some good quality 3mm PVC core , that stuff ain't cheap , and some nice 17 kg EPS .

Bummer! ... If you use the old DIvinycell again just make sure you pre wet it, maybe squeegee it in to the pores really well.... Not sure how you applied the contact cement before but as you probably know, you need to apply it to both surfaces, then let it flash off before tacking down.... That said I would use epoxy...

Its only had three deaths , it's still got six lives left .
I want to keep it alive so I can give it a dam good thrashing in all conditions before I re make it . Possible tweaks or cutouts or something . I got some in mind .
